The Design Process
At Miners Rest, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is all about curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving. One of the most exciting ways our students tackle challenges is through the Design Process, which is a simple, hands-on method used by real engineers, inventors, and creators around the world.
Here are the simple steps:
1. Ask and Research
What is the problem? What do we need? What do we want our design to do?
2. Imagine
Think of all the different ideas that could solve the problem. Be creative! There are no bad ideas at this stage.
3. Plan
Choose the best idea and make a plan. Draw a diagram, list materials, and think about how it will work.
4. Create
Build a model or prototype. This is the hands-on part where ideas start to come to life!
5. Test
Try out your design. Does it work the way you hoped?
6. Improve
Make changes to make it better. Designers often go through these steps many times!
The Design Process helps students:
- Build resilience and confidence
- Think creatively and critically
- Work together as a team
- Understand that mistakes are part of learning
This year our Design process topic is all about cars and the students will all be creating a model car.
Some equipment donations would be appreciated:
- 600mL soft drink bottles
- old or scratched CDs and DVDs
