Year 6 News

Reading

We have now finished reading our novel “Wonder”. Students loved completing our end of novel activities to reflect on our learning over the course of our reading. We learnt lots through the eyes of August and his family and friends. We have discussed themes of resilience, respect, bullying, acceptance and self-love. Year 6 students are looking forward to watching the movie next week where students will be comparing the book and the movie and why the movie has some differences.

Writing

To finish this term, Year 6 students have stayed engaged and focused as they explored the process of writing and delivering effective speeches. They examined a range of well-known speeches, identifying the techniques speakers use to keep an audience interested, such as clear arguments and confident expression. Students then applied these skills to their own work, planning and drafting speeches they could use to accept an award. They revised and edited their writing to strengthen their ideas and improve clarity. Students practised presenting their speeches, working on delivery, tone and body language to communicate their message with confidence.

Maths

In Maths, Year 6 students have been linking their understanding of fractions, percentages and decimals to the concept of chance. Through their number knowledge, they have been predicting outcomes with numerical values and testing their predictions to check for the outcomes. Students have also been looking at analysing this data and predicting possible trends in the data.

Auslan

Over the past fortnight in Auslan, our Year 6 students have been learning to express a range of emotions through both signing and facial expressions. They practised emotions such as happy, worried, confused and curious, focusing on how facial expressions help convey meaning.

Students also worked on describing themselves and introducing themselves with greater detail. They used signs such as “about me,” “my name” (with fingerspelling), hair types and colours, eye colours, and height descriptors like tall, short and medium. This work helped students build confidence in sharing personal information and communicating more naturally in Auslan.

Inquiry

For the past fortnight, our Year 6 students have been working towards their end-of-term Inquiry project: preparing for our Model United Nations. Each student has now received the country they will represent as a delegate in Week 11, and they have been working in their delegate teams to research their country’s context and its position on the issue we will debate at the summit: access to clean drinking water. As a class, we explored why clean drinking water is not a privilege but a fundamental human right, and why many communities around the world still struggle to access it. Year 6 students reflected on the importance of safe and reliable water sources and recognised how fortunate we are to have clean water readily available in Australia.

As part of our civics and citizenship learning this term, Year 6 students have been exploring the Australian government and how the three levels of government work together to run the country. To deepen their understanding, we were fortunate to have representatives from the Parliament of Victoria visit and run a role-play of the Legislative Assembly.

Students stepped into roles such as the Premier, Leader of the Opposition and Speaker of the House, along with other key positions. They debated a bill proposal, presented arguments and ultimately voted on whether the bill should pass. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to see our learning come to life and experience government in action.

Social and Emotional Learning

This week, Year 6 students learned how to recognise and respond to unsafe or disrespectful situations.

Our learning intention was to understand how to respond safely and confidently when we see or experience harmful behaviour. Students used the NO, GO, TELL, CHANGE model, they explored safe ways to seek help, and learnt simple, clear phrases they can use to describe a problem. They also took part in short role-plays to build confidence in using these help-seeking strategies.
