Year 5 News

Reading

In Reading, Year 5 students are finishing the last few chapters of our novel study, Beowulf. They have been exploring the characters, learning new vocabulary and discussing key events as the story reaches its exciting ending! To complete the unit, students will be creating their own book reviews, where they will reflect on the storyline and share their opinions on the text. It has been great to see students enjoy the story, even though it’s not a genre they would usually choose to read.

Writing

This fortnight in Writing, Year 5 students have been learning all about the features of fairy tales and fables. Students explored known stories such as Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs, identifying the magical elements that make these texts so engaging. They have used their creativity and imagination to make each story their own by changing at least one key element, such as reversing character roles, the problem or the setting. Year 5 students have also had the opportunity to put all of their ideas together and plan, draft, revise, edit and publish their own original fairytales. Take a look at some of them below!

Maths

In Maths, Year 5 students have finished off their units on volume, capacity and mass. Students have enjoyed participating in interactive board games that helped them apply the knowledge and skills they have learned throughout the unit.

Year 5 students have also begun their new unit on money and budgeting, starting with a revision of money values and working through real life worded problems that require them to calculate totals and find out the correct change. Over the next few lessons, students will begin their own mini budgeting project, where they will put their skills into practice by planning, calculating and making financial decisions.

Social and Emotional Learning

This fortnight in SEL, Year 5 students have been learning about the importance of respecting and including others by exploring what learning disabilities are. Students have learnt how learning disabilities affect how someone learns or processes information, and do not affect how smart a person is. They worked on researching a range of learning disabilities, including dyslexia, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, dysgraphia, dyscalculia and auditory processing disorder. They explored what each disability was, how it can affect someone’s learning and daily life, common myths and ways classmates and teachers can offer support.

Airborn Excursion - Yesterday, Year 5 students enjoyed an exciting and active day at Airborn Air Park. Students had the opportunity to explore a wide range of play zones and activities. They had a fantastic time launching onto the giant airbag and testing their skills on the elite trampolines. Students loved participating in Dodgeball and trying out the Slam Dunk trampoline basketball area. The Ninja Warrior Course, Ninja Zone and Rock Climbing were also highlights, giving students the chance to climb, balance and participate in obstacles. One of the Airborn staff members even complimented our students, noting how polite they were and how beautifully they represented our school with their positive behaviour!

It was a wonderful way for students to end the year as a Year 5 cohort, enjoying time together and having fun with all their friends and teachers. Check out some photos of all the fun we had!
