Year 2 News

Reading

As the year comes to an end, Year 2 students have remained focused and continued developing their comprehension strategies during Reading. They read a range of fiction texts and responded to comprehension questions that explored how characters developed and changed throughout the stories. Students also examined the techniques authors used to make their writing engaging, including the use of humour to create interest. In addition, Year 2 students shifted their attention to non-fiction texts, analysing text structures and organisational features. They answered comprehension questions that required them to locate, interpret, and evaluate information, strengthening their ability to understand and navigate factual texts.

‘It’s been really fun and interesting.’ - Jamari 2A

‘We have been analysing characters. It's been really interesting but sometimes confusing.’ - Zoe 2A

‘We have been analysing non fiction texts and we compared and contrasted in our reading group and when you analyse non fiction texts it’s easy to answer the questions. - Jessica 2A

Writing

This fortnight in Year 2, students have been writing procedural texts. They have been writing texts telling the reader how to do something, giving step by step instructions and clear explanations.

Students discussed the importance of giving clear, ordered instructions to help someone complete a task successfully. The children enjoyed planning and writing their own “How to Get Dressed” procedures, thinking carefully about the correct order of clothing and how to make each step easy for others to follow.

“I enjoy getting to tell the steps about how to put your clothes on. Some people found it tricky because they forgot some steps!” - Guntas, 2C

“The peanut butter video was funny because they kept doing the wrong steps in making a sandwich. I liked how we got to write ours in steps!” - Emily, 2C

“We were writing about getting dressed. We had to be specific and we had to write in chronological order. My favourite part was watching the peanut butter sandwich video.” - Ivaan, 2C

Maths

This fortnight in maths, Year 2 students have been looking at division and thinking about how it means sharing equally. The students have been using different strategies to solve division questions, including sharing counters into equal groups or using their knowledge of skip counting. They have been looking at open ended questions, for example, they get a number and have to see how many ways it is divisible. Some students even started looking at dividing with remainders.

“We have been doing division which means sharing equally” - Armani, 2C

“We can use groups to share equally or we can skip count to get the answer.” - Tony, 2C

Inquiry

As we approach the end of the year, Year 2 students have continued to develop their ability to identify characters who demonstrate respect and cooperation. They read books about Steve Irwin and Michael Jordan, which helped them understand how respectful relationships are built through teamwork and collaboration. Year 2 students also learned to recognise situations that feel safe or unsafe and discussed strategies for responding appropriately. To conclude the year, students will create posters that highlight important ways to stay safe online.

‘People were writing about what respect and cooperation looks like. We read a book about Steve Irwin. Steve Irwin shows respect to nature, the environment and animals. - Indy 2A

‘He helped all the crocodiles and snakes. When he got older he put on a show and series on TV. He married his wife. They worked together to make TV shows. This is a true story.’ - Mya 2A

‘We did a T chart about showing respect and cooperation about a boy who likes animals. He was helping and caring for the animals. He was showing cooperation with the people who helped him care for the animals. - Indiana 2C

‘The boy held a crocodile.’ - Mya 2A

‘We looked at the character traits. We made a T chart and we wrote down what he respects and how he works. - Amy 2A

Social and Emotional Learning

This fortnight in Year 2, the students have been thinking about personal space and how to respect it. They have been learning about the No, Go, Tell strategy to help them if someone is invading their personal space. Also, the students have identified trusted adults who they could go to if they needed to tell someone about an incident. They learnt about personal space with regards to their private parts and how the No, Go, Tell strategy would be used.

“If someone is in your personal space we use No, Go, Tell!” - 2C
