Learning News

We recently completed our annual PAT Maths assessment, and the results across the school are overwhelmingly positive, demonstrating fantastic growth in our students' mathematical thinking and skills - a huge testament to the hard work of both students and teachers this year. Building on this momentum, our classrooms are buzzing with hands-on learning, currently focusing on important concepts like measuring perimeter and area, exploring the likelihood of events in Chance, and making great strides in fact fluency (knowing their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts quickly). This focus ensures students are developing both their problem-solving ability and their foundational number sense.

K/1

Over the last two weeks in Maths, the K/1 class focused on two main areas. Kindergarten students focused on breaking numbers into parts that make a whole (addition), especially up to 10, using counters and frames. They also worked on being able to instantly recognise small groups of objects and practised the method of counting on to find a total. Year 1 students mastered number bonds to 10 and explored the important link between addition and subtraction, known as Fact Families. Additionally, Year 1 students spent time learning the vocabulary of Chance, using terms like certain, impossible, likely and unlikely to describe everyday events and experimental outcomes.

Year 1

Last fortnight, Year 1 has been exploring the exciting world of Chance! Students have been learning to predict and describe the likelihood of different events — from “certain” and “likely” to “unlikely” and “impossible.” Through fun games, hands-on activities and everyday examples, they’ve been discovering how to think about outcomes and make simple predictions. It’s been wonderful to see their curiosity and reasoning skills grow!

Year 2

Our Year 2 students have had a brilliant fortnight exploring inverse operations and number bonds in Maths! We discovered the powerful relationship between addition and subtraction, learning that they are opposites—one can undo the other. This discovery helped us solve problems like true detectives. Our learning was made extra exciting by a special letter from Hermione Granger! She challenged the class to find as many equations as possible that resulted in the answers 17, 20 and 9. The children rose to the challenge, using number bonds and the inverse relationship to creatively write families of equations. It was fantastic to see them build such a strong, deep understanding of numbers!

Year 3

Last fortnight, our Year 3 students have been diving into our Geometric Measure unit, focusing on Length. We've been busy learning to measure and estimate lengths using a combination of metres, centimetres and millimetres. Students practised estimating and accurately recording lengths for both large and small objects, even exploring the need for millimetres for precise measurements of tiny items. This hands-on experience has helped the students develop a stronger understanding of the standard units of length and how to use different tools, like rulers and tape measures, correctly.

Year 4

DuringWeeks 3 and 4, our Year 4 mathematicians really got to grips with the essential concepts of Length and Perimeter. We focused heavily on conversions, ensuring students can fluently switch between units. They mastered the relationships between the smallest units, knowing that 10mm= 1cm, and the larger ones, understanding that 100cm = 1m.

To apply this knowledge to the real world, we headed outdoors! Students used a trundle wheel to measure the perimeter of large spaces, which was a fantastic, hands-on activity that brought the abstract math to life.

Stage 3

Mastering Area in Stage 3 Maths

Over the past two weeks, Stage 3 students have been diving deep into the concept of Area! Building on our recent study of 2D shapes and angles, students have successfully learned how to calculate the area of rectangles, parallelograms, and triangles.

We've explored several fascinating applications, discovering that:

  • Different shapes can have the same area;

  • Complex shapes can be easily solved by dividing (partitioning and dissecting) them into simpler ones;

  • Rotating and duplicating shapes can simplify the calculation process.

As the students have learned, calculating area is a vital skill used daily in many trades, such as painting and carpet laying. We look forward to seeing them apply this important learning in the future!

Well done Stage 3.
