Human Powered Racing Update

Our first Energy Breakthrough Event

Our first Energy Breakthrough event left our students, staff and parents filled with an infectious feeling. The atmosphere was highly charged with excitement, nervousness, triumphs and exhaustion. All of the training, time spent during lunchtimes, after school and outside of school came down to this moment. The students were absolutely buzzing with excitement and the comradery between them was paramount. Over four days, the MPS Racing team had an experience they will never forget. From camping with their friends, team dinners, building their endurance throughout the race, supporting each other, working together as a pit crew and having an incredible amount of fun.

During practise on Wednesday night, we had a lot of nerves, feeling overwhelmed and realising how much of a challenge lied ahead for our 14 hour race the next morning. Sarah and I were incredibly proud of the determination shown to overcome these feelings and the support the team demonstrated to each other throughout the night. Lap times were slow as the students familiarised themselves with the track and they were surrounded by 70 other trikes racing around, with strategies of overtaking and fast pit changes.

The 14 hour trial had our students show immense improvement! We saw lap times drop from 9 to 10 minutes, to anywhere between 2:30 minutes to 3:30 minutes - an incredible achievement and effort by all riders. The faces of the students when they got out of the trike was the confirmation that this program is here to stay at MPS. The unity that was created between a group of students that may not have crossed paths otherwise was so incredible to see. New friendships were formed and  teamwork gained a whole new meaning for the 19 Year 5/6 students.

Our two teams, Spitfire and Vision represented the school and made everyone at MPS proud. Conducting themselves with positivity, support and collaboration. Our final results were 44th Overall for Spitfire and 49th for Vision, an amazing effort by both teams.

We cannot wait to get started next year and begin training, expanding our team with new and current members.  This is only the beginning for MPS Racing and we look forward to seeing what we can achieve in the years to come.
