Celebrating Learning

The Kalevala

These past weeks in Main Lesson we have focused on the legends of the Kalevala, the mythological tales of Finland and the world's beginnings. Students have created paintings, beeswax figures, and have completed a series of illustrations and writings about the stories shared from the Kalevala. We excitingly move onto local area mapping next for Main Lesson, in which students will measure, map, illustrate, and devise ways of showing areas known to them that have scale, information, and show details not explicitly shown to us (such as the width of their kitchen/classroom).

Down below is a series of images from the students' Kalevala Main Lesson work and some of their thoughts of the Main Lesson.

Matilda says “There should be more cats involved, and there should be more penguins involved, however there is a good amount of cows in the stories.”

Banjo says “I think the Main Lesson stories should have more shiny objects.”

Leo says “I like how there's lots of weird magical things happening.”

Jethro says “I loved learning about Finnish mythology in this Main Lesson and learning about characters such as Ilmatar and Vainamoinen.”

Ambrose says “I think it was a very good Main Lesson, however it felt like it was short and cut off a bit.”
