Transitions

Nicole Talitzki, Early Childhood Teacher

As children grow and develop, they learn about transitions. Transitions to Kindergarten, transitions within the kindergarten program, transitions at home, and transitions to school communities.

“Transitions are about relationships and involve

consistency and change. Families and early childhood professionals work together to provide consistent environments for children between home and other forms of care and education. Recognising and supporting families to manage transitions contributes to

children’s wellbeing.” VEYLDF, 2016, p. 32

At Glen Chelsea Kindergarten our children, families and educators are currently experiencing transitions and are learning to be adaptable, resilient, and patient. We are learning as a community that transitions require communication, trust, and care. It is true that a child’s confidence in managing change is enhanced when they have a circle of security- family, early childhood professionals and their peers.

At Glen Chelsea Kindergarten our families, children and educators are supported to manage change through embedded strategies.

  • reciprocal relationships that actively support families, children, educators
  • sharing and valuing relevant information
  • shared goals
  • reflective practice
  • recognition of children’s agency and their role in transitions
  • demonstrated respect for the cultural histories and heritage of all involved in transition processes.
  • Early childhood professionals support children in building strong social and emotional skills and strategies – such as perseverance, sociability, and self-esteem
  • Recognise children’s strengths and building on the competence they demonstrate.
