Brother Ambrose Treacy
This week marks the 155th Anniversary of the arrival of Christian Brother Ambrose Treacy in Australia. Invited to begin Catholic Schools in Australia but given no resources beyond which he could gather from generous benefactors, Ambrose has an incredible legacy of starting no less than 30 schools in 30 years across Australasia before ending his days at St Joseph’s, Gregory Terrace in Brisbane.
Garden Of Remembrance Ceremony
Willoughby Member of Parliament the Honourable Tim James commends the St Pius X College contingent at Chatswood RSL Garden of Remembrance Day Ceremony.
St Pius X College was well represented at the Chatswood RSL - Willoughby Council Garden of Remembrance Day Commemoration where College Captain Quinton Crispe, Vice Captains Liam Boswell and Jose Monk, along with Tom Reay of Year 11, supported Year 6 students Liam Hincksman and Oliver Ryder in laying our wreath with respect and remembrance of all who have served.
We were in the fine company of Mayor Tanya Taylor, Mayor Emeritus Gail Giles-Gibney, NSW Member for Willoughby Mr Tim James, Chatswood RSL President Mr Barney Flanagan, Mr Garry Brigden and Lt Col Matt Vertzonis. All of whom complimented our students on their representation of our highly regarded College.
Year 6 student Oliver Ryder wore the medals of his great grandfather Kevin McCarthy 56Bn. Kevin fought the 1916 WWI battle of the Somme as a 16 year old, later enrolling his son Kevin McCarthy Jnr as a first day pupil in 1937! Kevin McCarthy Snr then joined up again in WWII in his 40s to serve in the Middle East and then the Pacific.
The additional medals worn are the service medals of Oliver’s grandfather Martin Brannan snr, who as a product of St Paul’s CBC Manly, and a Sydney Morning Herald press photographer, also served in the “Nashos” and Citizen Military Force!
This Tuesday when our Year 5 students attended the Kokoda Track Memorial at Concord Repatriation hospital and listened to Reg Chard, veteran of the Kokoda Track, they recounted the words of Bede Tongs MM, Kokoda veteran, who visited St Pius X before we hiked the Track in 2014!
We Will remember them!
Lest we Forget
Year 9 Ceroc Dance Workshop
Year 9 Ceroc Dance Workshop with Brigidine College St Ives this Friday is a culmination of our Respectful Relationships Program 2023.
We wish our Year 9 students well in bringing their Respectful Relationships learning to a culmination this Friday at our Oxford Falls campus for their Ceroc Dance workshop. Students who would like to assist Mr Brannan with welcoming our guests, leading Acknowledgement of Country, prayer, and sports activities in the breaks are invited to meet with Mr Brannan on Wednesday to plan these activities.
Students are to wear full sports uniform, bring their recess, lunch and water.
Dismissal direct from Oxford Falls or at Jamieson Square en route to Chatswood may be possible with permission note from parents and high standard of student behaviour.
Old Boys Business Group Network Meeting
In an innovative development organised by Old Boys Association Presidents Mr David Bullard and Mr Barry Wong, a group of 30 Old Boys who are prominent in a range of fields met at Chatswood on Tuesday to plan to mentor and support like-minded students and younger Old Boys who maybe starting or planning their careers in similar fields.
College Principal Mr Michael Ronchetti, Business Manager Mr Lachlan Skeen and Careers Advisor Mr Joseph Madani joined Assistant Principal Mr Sean Brannan in attending this meeting. It’s a great initiative of the St Pius X College Old Boys Association.
