Year 3

Edendale Community Farm Excursion

Last Wednesday, the Year 3 students embarked on their excursion to Edendale Community Farm in Eltham. They had an amazing day in the sun, learning about recycling and composting. Students also had an opportunity to pat and feed lots of the animals that were around the farm, and create items using recycled materials.

Some thoughts about the excursion from 3KY students:

  • "It was really fun and interesting, and we learnt a lot about waste!" - Amelia
  • "We learnt about the animals and what they eat, and it was lots of fun!" - Harry
  • "They animals there were really cute, and the people who work there were really kind and taught us lots!" - Sereen
  • "The activities were really fun and we got to do so many things that we don't usually do!" - Giri

Waste Audit

Continuing with our Inquiry theme in Week 6, we completed a Waste Audit of the red bins that are around the outside areas of the playground.

We were looking to see how much rubbish goes into these bins that isn't landfill rubbish, that could be put into other bins to be recycled, or composted.

We found some interesting results!

Inquiry - Supplies Needed!

In Week 9, students will be creating their own sculptures made from recycled materials. In order for this to work effectively, we are asking students to bring in any CLEAN recycling from home. This could include:

  • Soft Plastics (eg. rinsed out chip packets)
  • Plastic Bottles (soap containers, small soft drink bottles)
  • Glass Bottles
  • Cardboard
  • Lids/Bottle Caps/Corks
  • Anything else you have at home that can be recycled, or was otherwise going to be thrown out!

We are asking students to bring in supplies in Week 8, to begin to be used in Week 9 and onwards. Hopefully we can gather a class supply of different items, so that the students can share around and find what they need!

Year 4

Melbourne Sea Life Aquarium Excursion

Year 4 students travelled to the Melbourne Aquarium for an excursion last Friday. The children had a great time looking at all the incredible sea animals at the aquarium. In line with the current Year 4 Inquiry Unit, a special focus was applied to the recognition of ecosystems in the ocean and how many different living things rely on each other to survive there.

Here are some student reflections on the day:

  • There was cool stuff in there and I liked the big shark and crocodile - Kai
  • The penguins at the end were funny and cool - Ashton
  • I learnt a lot of fun facts about the Port Jackson sharks - Hunter
  • I liked looking at the penguins, especially the King Penguins. It was cool when the bubbles were blown for them - Zack.

Great Barrier Reef Expo

In recent weeks, the Year 4 students have been researching and investigating an aspect of the Great Barrier Reef that they are most interested in. They have now begun preparing engaging 3D models and presentations that will be displayed at a special 'Expo' on Thursday, 30th of November. The Expo will run from 11.30am - 1.00pm, with parents and special visitors most welcome to come along and see the work of the children.

Indonesian Consulate Visit

On Monday, two members of the Indonesian consulate came to visit the Year 4 students and talk about different facts and cultural elements of Indonesia. The children took part in some quizzes, dance and music lessons and classroom-based activities that investigated Indonesian animals and the difference in population density between Indonesia and Australia.

The consulate visit was a wonderful lead-up to this coming Monday's school-wide Indonesian Day. On this day, we encourage students to attend school wearing the national colours of Indonesia (red and white). They will be given the opportunity throughout the day to participate in a range of activities that celebrate and explore the culture of Indonesia.
