Altona College Run4Fun Colour Explosion 

 

Did you know that our Run4Fun Colour Explosion fundraiser is online only? All cash donations need to be converted to online donations using a credit or debit card before the platform closes at 11.59PM tonight, Friday November 24. 

 

Here’s how to convert your donations:

1.       Count up all your cash donations. 

2.       Make a donation on your online profile page using a credit or debit card, equal to the value of your cash donations. 

3.       Keep the cash!

 

If you don’t have an online profile page yet, it's not too late to create one  at www.australianfundraising.com.au. LAST DAY TO FUNDRAISE!

 

We are looking for more volunteers to help at the event next Friday December 1, anytime between 10am-3:45pm. Volunteers must have a valid WWCC. Please email Sarah Prismall at altonafundraisingcommittee@gmail.com if you are interested.

 

Several amazing local businesses have generously donated vouchers to support our fundraising efforts. These vouchers will be offered as 'Silent Auction' items both virtually for those who cannot attend the event in the days prior, and at the event itself. More information (and a Google Form link to place a bid) will be on Compass early next week. So far the auctions include vouchers from ClimbWest, JP Evermore Photography, Pier 71, and Altona Sports Club. Thank you also to Science in Public for making a cash donation to the school.

 

Parents a task for you this weekend - don't forget to organise a WHITE T-SHIRT for your child to wear next Friday please if you haven't already.

 

Checklist for December 1:

  • Wear a white t-shirt, and comfortable clothes. Runners or sneakers are also recommended.
  • This is a community event, so please come along! The event will be on the oval from 1-3pm
  • Bring cash for Mr Fresh Icecream Truck and the Coffee Van
  • There will be a volunteer-run Stall offering Christmas gifts, silent auctions items, lollies, chocolates, and fairy floss! All proceeds will add to the fundraising total. Please consider sending some cash with your children.
  • Be SunSmart. We'll be outside for several hours, in the peak of the day. Sunburn is not the colour we want to see!
  • Be prepared for surprises, laughter, and a good dose of fun!

Did you know in the past 40 years, the percentage of children who walk or ride to school has dropped from 75% to 25%?  One of the top reasons why parents hold their kids back from riding to school is because of safety concerns. 

 

The Amy Gillett Foundation is Australia’s leading cycling safety organisation.  They are dedicated to making bike riding safe for everyone in the community and making it easier for people to choose to ride a bike. 

 

One part The Amy Gillett Foundation, is the BikeSpot program, which is an interactive map that allows anyone to mark where they feel safe or unsafe while riding their bike. You can view the map and make your mark at: bikespot.org  or via the QRG on the flyer below

Williamstown Sailing Club - Summer holiday sailing for teens

 

Summer holiday sailing courses for teenagers at Williamstown Sailing Club are now open for booking!  Try something new and #DiscoverSailing

  • Learn 2 Sail 4 Teens: 16-18  January, 9am-4pm

This Australian Sailing accredited courses take you from beginner to knowing the fundamentals of dinghy sailing. Open to all 12-17 year olds, you don't have to have sailed before!For any younger brothers or sisters, we are also running Tackers, which is a fun games-based sailing program designed for kids aged 7 to 12.  It's a great introductory program for kids to allow them to try sailing in a friendly, protective and fun environment. TACKERS is all about having a great time with other kids, playing loads of games and going on adventures while learning how to sail together.

MacKillop’s supported playgroups provide a fun, social outlet for parents, carers and their children. The playgroups provide parents and carers with the opportunity to meet socially and for their children to enjoy activities that encourage their development and social skills.

 

MacKillop’s supported playgroups are available to families living in Melbourne’s metropolitan western region. With a focus on multicultural families, the playgroups bring together children and their families of different cultures. Staff at the playgroup can connect parents and families to MacKillop's parenting teams and support the community.

 

MacKillop provides guest speakers throughout each term to speak on topics parents have told us they would find helpful to hear.

 

The playgroups are free to attend and morning tea is provided. Bookings are not required. The playgroups are available to families (parents and carers) of pre-school aged children at the following location:

Fear-Less Triple P program

 for assistance with managing anxieties 

 

Coming to the end of the year, we know that anxiety can be seen kicking in for some students (and families!). The Federal Australian Government has now fully funded the Fear-Less Triple P program online, to support parents. 

 

Triple P is one of the few parenting programs in the world with evidence to show it works. There are (literally hundreds of) trials and studies to show Triple P works for most families, in many different cultures, and in many different family situations. Triple P Online is also the first online parenting program proven to work. The program is focused on helping parents to learn a variety of cognitive behavioural strategies for anxiety management, encouraging them to apply these themselves for all their children. It is a useful tool for engaging parents (or caregivers) of children with anxiety aged from 6 to 14 years.

 

WHAT IS COVERED IN THE SESSIONS?

Session 1: Anxiety – what is it and how does it develop?

Session 2: Promoting emotional resilience in children

Session 3: Encouraging realistic thinking

Session 4: Understanding avoidance

Session 5: Parental strategies for responding to children’s anxiety

Session 6: Constructive problem solving – how to promote it and maintain gains

 

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

The Fear-Less Triple P Online course has 6 modules. Each module of the Triple P Online Course only takes about 30 minutes to an hour. You don’t need to do it all in one block, either. Some people prefer to just do ten or fifteen minutes a day.

The day involved rotational sports and activities, followed by a 2-hour beach safety session run by Life Saving Victoria that included Everyday Lifesavers, Be Aware and Be Prepared, Survival Strategies, Rescue Strategies and Safe Body Boarding. VCE Health & Human Development In term 3, the Health and Human Development students had the pleasure of experiencing parenthood with our simulation babies. Over the last few months, the year 12s have been a part of several events to celebrate their final year of schooling. Such events included the Year 12 ReCharge Day, Year 12 Celebration Day at STRIKE bowling, Year 12 final assembly, Year 12 Graduation Breakfast and finally the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony.We would like to say farewell to our year 12 cohort of 2023 and wish them all the very best for their future endeavours. Here are some snaps to celebrate them.~ Ms Polglaze and Ms Newton ~   HAMPER FOR HOPE VCE-VM Personal Development students are committed to helping those who experience food insecurity in our community. After learning about food insecurity and the effects this has on people's health, lives, and wellbeing, we have partnered with the Salvation Army to create 'Hamper's for Hope'.Each bag will have 8-10 items that will be delivered to families around our community to help alleviate some stress this coming holiday season. We also hope to be able to put something special in each bag for extra cheer (packet lollies, biscuits etc) We are committed to this project and doing our part for the community this holiday season, in the hopes we can support those living with food insecurity, and have committed to 25 'Hamper's for Hope' on behalf of Altona College. Donations are welcome for all members of our community and can be dropped off in the main office in the tubs provided.We thank you for your ongoing support of our projects and our commitment to helping those in our local area  Bank First Curriculum Garden Altona College was awarded the Bank First Teacher Initiatives Program Grant earlier in the year, the garden was designed by students from Years 7–12 along with our gardener Sarah. Health advice regarding immunisations recommends students receive the following: Year 7· Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine (one dose)· Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine (one dose). Year 10· Meningococcal A, C, W, Y vaccine (one dose). There are a number of students in years 7 to 12 who may have missed these important vaccines. This puts students at an increased risk of illness. If your child missed out on their school-based vaccinations, please speak to your GP or local council immunisation service about how they can catch up. To check if your child is due for any vaccines, refer to their immunisation history statement on the Australian Immunisation Register, using your MyGov account. Families, \u003c/p>\u003cp> \u003c/p>\u003cp>What a week it has been for one staff member!  On behalf of the college community, I extend my warmest congratulations to our Sports Coordinator / Teacher aide \u003ci>Shaun Mannagh\u003c/i> who was drafted to the Geelong Cats on Tuesday evening! \u003c/p>\u003cp> \u003c/p>\u003cp>Shaun has worked with staff and supported in classrooms whilst keeping our students active in the yard. He has been a bus driver, coach, and mentor and has undertaken a multitude of other roles that have kept our camps, sporting activities and excursions on track. As an integral member of the support team at Altona College for the past 6 years, he led the development of our lunch time Active Schools’ Program with the PE team for which our school has been recognised for by the department. Shaun has been a player with the Werribee Tigers since arriving in Melbourne where he has made a substantial contribution.  He had us glued to the broadcast when he starred in the grand final this year kicking 6 goals and winning Best on Field despite his team's loss, grabbing widespread media attention. His dream was to reach AFL level and we couldn’t be prouder or happier for him and his family when he was picked number 36 this week.  I have no doubt we will have a few more Cats fans at the College as they watch Shaun play and follow his journey in the future. \u003c/p>\u003cp> \u003c/p>\u003cp>On behalf of all of us at Altona College, our sincere congratulations to you Shaun. You will be sadly missed by our students and staff having made a significant contribution to the health and wellbeing of our students through physical activity programs.  We wish you every success with the Geelong Cats and look forward to seeing your journey in the years to come.\u003c/p>\u003cp> \u003c/p>\u003cp>Our Year 12 students have celebrated the end of their schooling and closed another chapter in their lives. They dressed in costumes, along with the staff, and joined us for breakfast last week where they shared some stories and a video montage of their time in high school.  Following the presentation of some fun awards they interacted with our early years students which is now an annual tradition. The smile on the youngsters faces said it all as they were high 5’d and danced along with our seniors and then chased the frog around the turf. \u003c/p>\u003cp> \u003c/p>\u003cp>At the final assembly, the foundation of our college shone through in the speeches from our Captains and Vice Captains Razan, Liam and Henry. Our student leaders spoke fondly of all their teachers and their engagement with each one of them, the way they made learning fun, and challenged and supported them to grow sometimes through the hardly engaging content.  Their speeches were heartfelt, filled with emotion, special memories and joy. When I hear our Captain and Vice Captains speak, they epitomise everything that we could ever have hoped for from an Altona College graduate.  As a Principal I am so very proud of these young leaders, and I know that they each have a promising future. They were back in at the College this week finalising our inaugural yearbook which was a vision of our captain Razan. \u003c/p>\u003cp> \u003c/p>\u003cp>As we marked the end of 13 years of education for the cohort, I recognised the milestone of 6 students. Michael Zipevski, Desiree Giannakopoulos, Liam Meerza, Dannielle Stone, and Riley Thomas who spent 13 years at Altona College, officially their entire schooling in our changing community and have travelled the path of change with us all. I also acknowledge Wynona Hobbs who has completed 12 years having joined the college as a year 1 student. It has been an absolute privilege to have been their school Principal as I have been afforded an incredible opportunity to have been a part of their journey through primary school and to the completion of the secondary years, an opportunity very few Principals are offered.\u003c/p>\u003cp> \u003c/p>\u003cp>Our valedictory evening was a significant event for the graduates and their families last Thursday evening with the pride from both parties evident. Once again, our Captains shone through in the most poignant of speeches where they paid testimony to the families for their incredible support in their lives. There was barely a dry eye in the room by the end of each leader’s personal address and I commend their ability to engage an audience and speak with such confidence and composure. The growth each have made over the year has been significant as it has been for each of the graduates present on the evening.  The next step for the cohort is the receipt of their VCE results on the 11th of December and the release of offers from further educational providers in January 2024. \u003c/p>\u003cp> \u003c/p>\u003cp>Today we say farewell to the Year 10 and 11 students who conclude their educational program for the year. Our year 10 students are heading off on work experience next week exploring a range of vocational activities. It is hard to believe that the year has drawn to a close for our senior school. He has been a bus driver, coach, and mentor and has undertaken a multitude of other roles that have kept our camps, sporting activities and excursions on track. As an integral member of the support team at Altona College for the past 6 years, he led the development of our lunch time Active Schools’ Program with the PE team for which our school has been recognised for by the department. Shaun has been a player with the Werribee Tigers since arriving in Melbourne where he has made a substantial contribution.  He had us glued to the broadcast when he starred in the grand final this year kicking 6 goals and winning Best on Field despite his team's loss, grabbing widespread media attention. His dream was to reach AFL level and we couldn’t be prouder or happier for him and his family when he was picked number 36 this week.  I have no doubt we will have a few more Cats fans at the College as they watch Shaun play and follow his journey in the future.  On behalf of all of us at Altona College, our sincere congratulations to you Shaun. You will be sadly missed by our students and staff having made a significant contribution to the health and wellbeing of our students through physical activity programs.  We wish you every success with the Geelong Cats and look forward to seeing your journey in the years to come. Our Year 12 students have celebrated the end of their schooling and closed another chapter in their lives. They dressed in costumes, along with the staff, and joined us for breakfast last week where they shared some stories and a video montage of their time in high school.  Following the presentation of some fun awards they interacted with our early years students which is now an annual tradition. The smile on the youngsters faces said it all as they were high 5’d and danced along with our seniors and then chased the frog around the turf.  At the final assembly, the foundation of our college shone through in the speeches from our Captains and Vice Captains Razan, Liam and Henry. Our student leaders spoke fondly of all their teachers and their engagement with each one of them, the way they made learning fun, and challenged and supported them to grow sometimes through the hardly engaging content.  Their speeches were heartfelt, filled with emotion, special memories and joy. When I hear our Captain and Vice Captains speak, they epitomise everything that we could ever have hoped for from an Altona College graduate.  As a Principal I am so very proud of these young leaders, and I know that they each have a promising future. They were back in at the College this week finalising our inaugural yearbook which was a vision of our captain Razan.  As we marked the end of 13 years of education for the cohort, I recognised the milestone of 6 students. Michael Zipevski, Desiree Giannakopoulos, Liam Meerza, Dannielle Stone, and Riley Thomas who spent 13 years at Altona College, officially their entire schooling in our changing community and have travelled the path of change with us all. I also acknowledge Wynona Hobbs who has completed 12 years having joined the college as a year 1 student. It has been an absolute privilege to have been their school Principal as I have been afforded an incredible opportunity to have been a part of their journey through primary school and to the completion of the secondary years, an opportunity very few Principals are offered. Our valedictory evening was a significant event for the graduates and their families last Thursday evening with the pride from both parties evident. Once again, our Captains shone through in the most poignant of speeches where they paid testimony to the families for their incredible support in their lives. There was barely a dry eye in the room by the end of each leader’s personal address and I commend their ability to engage an audience and speak with such confidence and composure. The Federal Australian Government has now fully funded the Fear-Less Triple P program online, to support parents.  Triple P is one of the few parenting programs in the world with evidence to show it works. There are (literally hundreds of) trials and studies to show Triple P works for most families, in many different cultures, and in many different family situations. Triple P Online is also the first online parenting program proven to work. The program is focused on helping parents to learn a variety of cognitive behavioural strategies for anxiety management, encouraging them to apply these themselves for all their children. It is a useful tool for engaging parents (or caregivers) of children with anxiety aged from 6 to 14 years. WHAT IS COVERED IN THE SESSIONS?Session 1: Anxiety – what is it and how does it develop?Session 2: Promoting emotional resilience in childrenSession 3: Encouraging realistic thinkingSession 4: Understanding avoidanceSession 5: Parental strategies for responding to children’s anxietySession 6: Constructive problem solving – how to promote it and maintain gains HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?The Fear-Less Triple P Online course has 6 modules. Each module of the Triple P Online Course only takes about 30 minutes to an hour. You don’t need to do it all in one block, either.
