From the Acting Principal

It is with much delight that I start my final editorial for the year with the announcement that we have appointed our architects for the new build. We were very impressed with the local architect firm, AVOR, and we are confident that the skills and experience they have in working with many schools will ensure our new building will deliver the outcomes we are after. Last week, the consultation process began with the AVOR managing directors Amy and Oliver, spending time at our school speaking with students and staff. The purpose of this first consultation is to listen to what our students and staff have to say about what they like about the school grounds, buildings and programs and what some potential needs might be not just for the coming years, but looking well into the future. As we know, a quality school building needs to stand the test of time and continue facilitating quality educational outcomes for students as we look to design something that is part of a masterplan. Next year, consultation with the school community will continue and we encourage parents to participate.

This year’s Presentation Night was an outstanding event as we acknowledged and celebrated the wonderful achievements of Cheltenham students this year. As always, the event was well attended and we appreciated the attendance of many presenting guests which added to the prestige of the evening.

Monday 11th December our Year 12 students received their VCE results and it is with great pleasure that we share an overview of them with our community.

Congratulations to the class of 2023. We are proud of your achievements and wish you all the best in the coming days and weeks as you begin the decision-making process for what courses you will accept, change and/or defer.

Although VCE results are an important measure of performance, we acknowledge they are just one measure. We are proud of what our students have achieved both in the classroom and in their extracurricular activities, and we wish our class of 2023 all the best in their lives beyond school.

Thank you to our team of dedicated staff and teachers who provide outstanding support and opportunities to our students every day.

Congratulations again to our graduating class of 2023.

As the school year draws to a close, I’d like to congratulate students for their commitment to school this year and reflect on the wonderful opportunities they have had at Cheltenham Secondary College. As I said to staff when I first arrived, the research evidence is very clear that teachers matter more to student achievement than any other aspect of schooling and that when it comes to student performance, teachers are estimated to have two to three times the effect of any other school factor, including services, facilities, and even leadership. We have outstanding teachers and staff at Cheltenham and I thank them for their commitment to ensuring every student has opportunities in the classroom and outside the classroom to grow, learn and be successful human beings.

On behalf of the staff at Cheltenham Secondary College, I wish our school community a safe and happy holiday break.

Kind regards

Carrie Wallis
