Principal's Report

Dear Parents,

Vale - John Ewels

It is with heavy hearts that we extend our deepest condolences on the tragic passing of John Ewels.  John made a remarkable impact on our school and community over many years.

John taught and led at a number of Macedon Ranges schools throughout his career, prior to commencing at Macedon Primary School as a teacher including a period where he was principal at Mount Macedon Primary School in the 80’s.

He took over as principal at Macedon Primary School when Ed Strehling passed away in 1995 and led the school until his retirement in 2010.

John took to leading the school in his charismatic and unique way and privileged time to teach students about the bush, local history, orienteering, caring for the environment, camping and developing a strong understanding of the importance of community. Many students from John’s era now send their children to Macedon Primary School.

The school has been shaped by John’s involvement and vision and his legacy exists in not only the school buildings and the Middle Gully bushland reserve, but the many people who he worked with and supported in his time here.

After John’s retirement in 2010, he remained heavily involved with the school’s outdoor education program and was actively involved in attending camps as recently as early this year.  He always supported and ran our school orienteering program, led student bushwalks and history lessons, dedicated time to maintaining the Middle Gully bushland reserve, helped out at weekly Landcare activities and always led the annual Year 5 and 6 bike ride to Hanging Rock.

John was partial to a cuppa and a slice of cake and the current staff all felt like he could sense when we had a morning tea in the staff room.  He would arrive, unannounced, and join our staff for a laugh and a chat.

The Macedon Primary School community stands with John’s family at this difficult time.  We offer our sincerest condolences and hope that the memories of John and the positive influence he had on our community and school bring some comfort and solace.
