A Fantastic Term 4 with Year 10 Humanities

Mrs Prue Vaughan, Middle Leader Humanities/Innovation

This term, the Year 10 Humanities class were given the opportunity to run their own small businesses. From candles, to crafted copper trees, bracelets, makeup bags and upcycled tote bags, the Year 10’s certainly made me proud. The attendance at the Mareeba Markets provided the students with the development of communication skills and built confidence in their ideas. Thank you to all who supported the students on their quest to become an entrepreneur. Especially St Thomas for providing the space at the markets.

I am so pleased to announce that on average each group generated $100 in profit and in total $910.00. This entire amount was used to support the St. Vinnies Christmas Appeal. The hampers which are an annual fundraiser for the College, are extremely important in assisting families to have a wonderful Christmas.

The assessment for the unit was a reflection on the business decisions made and areas for consideration if the students were to take on a business in the future. Here are some of the reflection responses:

“I loved making, creating and selling products under my own business, I would definitely do this again.”

“For improvement, the customer service approach could be more outgoing and friendly to maintain engagement.”

“I was surprised that I sold all 4 cat scratching posts, which exceeded my prediction for sales demand. I think I set the bar too low.”

“If I had the chance to do it again, I would allow more time to make the product so that I wasn’t under pressure a week before the markets.”
