Year Six - Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families,

This week, the students enjoyed one of their most highly anticipated events of their final term at St Thomas: pizza lunch at Zeppo. The students acquitted themselves wonderfully in this public setting and relished the tasty meal and change of scenery.

Their outstanding behaviour bodes well for an eventful Week 9. On Tuesday, they will perform the Christmas carol 'Do You See What I See?' in both the afternoon and the evening, providing you with two opportunities to see them sing depending on what best suits your schedule.  On Wednesday, the students will participate in a Leadership mass, followed by their excursion to Bounce on Thursday.

Mathematics:

In Maths, the students continued their statistical investigation to determine the optimal order for graduation lunch. They also learned some financial/accounting skills on Google Sheets before presenting their proposition to their peers.

How you can help at home:

Encourage your child to practice mental math by asking quick questions during daily activities, like estimating grocery totals or finding price differences on sale items.

English:

We continued reading our class novel, Can You See Me?, exploring Chapters 21-23. These chapters deepen students’ understanding of themes and characters, fostering empathy and awareness of different perspectives and personal experiences.  Students wrote persuasive letters after choosing between three potential topics: phones at schools, extended lunch breaks, and social media age restrictions.

How you can help at home:

Ask questions about news stories to encourage your child to form and articulate opinions with sound reasoning.

Religious Education:

Students prepared for this Wednesday's Leadership Mass.

AUSLAN:

In AUSLAN, students learned the signs for animals . They played charades using their new knowledge to see if other students could guess the signs. They could also sign the colour and size of the animal that students had to guess.

SEL:

Students continued to hone their help-seeking skills with a focus on communication this week.

Integrated Studies:

Students explored different music genres, examining instrumentation and tone color to discover what makes each genre unique and how different instruments contribute to each genre’s sound. Students used the Chrome Music Lab website to create their own mini songs.
