Matt Brown, a New Zealand-born Samoan author and communicator, is dedicated to eradicating domestic violence by supporting those who perpetrate it in their healing journeys. As a survivor of family violence and childhood sexual abuse, he began his advocacy by sharing his story with clients in his barbershops, fostering vulnerability, healing, and connection. In 2023, Matt and his wife, Sarah, launched Inner Boy, a free mental health app designed to support men in healing from intergenerational trauma.
Matt's advocacy work has extended beyond his barbershop. He has hosted free men's anti-violence support groups in various settings, including construction sites, gang pads, prisons, and indigenous spaces. His efforts have been recognized internationally, and he continues to inspire men to create change within their communities
Through Louisa Hayes, our wellbeing leader, we were fortunate enough to have Matt speak to our Year 8, 9, and 10 students about trauma, healing, respect, racism, and how to be the best person you can be. The main message that came from Matt was that everyone needs to be treated with kindness and that the younger generation can make a difference in breaking the cycle of violence.
