Visual Arts - Term 4
Prep AW & ST: Watercolour Bird Painting:
Prep students learned about colour and explored how to express themselves using watercolours to paint their bird artwork. They experimented with a range of primary and secondary colours, applying their understanding of colour to create vibrant and expressive designs. Through this activity, they enhanced their skills in using watercolours while developing a deeper appreciation for colour in art.
1SH & 1GJ: Alexander Calder Abstract Paintings:
Year 1 students explored the work of Alexander Calder and created their own abstract paintings by focusing on triangles and primary colours. They painted their compositions using only primary colours, carefully applying their understanding of how these colours interact. The students demonstrated their ability to paint the triangles with precision, using bold and vibrant colours in their designs. Through this activity, they enhanced their skills in colour theory and painting techniques while gaining inspiration from Calder's abstract style.
3JA, 3AJ & 3EN: Fernando Botero inspired Mona Lisa Cats:
Year 3 students explored the work of Fernando Botero and learned about his distinctive style, focusing on exaggerated proportions and volume. They applied this understanding to create their own version of the Mona Lisa, featuring a cat with exaggerated proportions. The students practiced their skills in proportion and volume, drawing the cat in a playful, exaggerated form. They also focused on the concept of value, carefully using darker shades of chalk to add depth and create a sense of form in their portraits. Through this activity, they successfully combined artistic techniques like tone, shape, and proportion to produce their own unique interpretations of the Mona Lisa in Botero's style.
5DG & 5ME: Georgia O’Keeffe Inspired Close-Up Leaf Paintings:
Year 5 students recently explored the work of environmental artist Georgia O’Keeffe, focusing on her leaf paintings. They learned about organic shapes and how to draw close-up leaves, ensuring that their drawings were as large as possible, filling most of the paper. Inspired by O'Keeffe’s style, students observed the art elements of line, color, and space, and practiced overlapping leaves to create the illusion of depth. Once the leaves were drawn, they outlined their work using black sharpies or oil pastels to emphasize the shapes and details. This activity encouraged them to connect with nature while honing their observational skills and understanding of space and composition.
6AA, 6CB & 6JC: Ken Done Inspired Sydney Harbour Bridge Paintings:
Year 6 students recently learned about movement and contrast through their Ken Done-inspired paintings of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. They applied paint using a dabbing technique to make the water appear as if it was moving in waves, creating a sense of flow and dynamism in their compositions. The students explored the use of contrasting colours, placing different shades next to each other to create striking areas that stood out. They also incorporated bright, bold colours to capture the vibrant energy of the scene. After completing their paintings, students outlined key features of the bridge and surrounding elements with black markers or black paint to give their artwork definition and emphasis.
These projects showcased the incredible creativity and developing artistic abilities of our students across all year levels!
