Chess State Finals
Congratulations to the Chess State finalists.
Earlier this term Essex Heights had the privilege of being represented in the 2024 State Finals held at Yarra Valley Grammar.
Many of these opportunities are only possible with volunteers to supervise and support the students throughout the day. Thank you to Yang Zhao and all the other parents who helped out on the day.
Special mention to Lucas Zhao for placing fourth on the day! Wow, what a great achievement. Here are some reflections from participating students:
Hi, my name is Ethan and I was really excited about the Tournament. It was really hard but I managed to get four out of seven wins. It was really fun!’
Hi my name is Tanush and I went to the Chess Tournament at Yarra Valley. Before the tournament, I was really excited and nervous. After the tournament I realised it was not that scary after all.
Hello, my name is Prabhava. In my tournament I had lots of fun, I got four out of seven games.
Hi, my name is Oscar. I went to a chess tournament at Yarra Valley. The chess tournament was a very fun experience and I wish to do it again next year.
Hi my name is Ehan. I went to the State tournament and won three games, drew one and lost three. It was really fun and nerve wrecking as all of the opponents I had faced were really tough and smart. One of my favourite things about the tournament was that I observed the way my opponents played and there were some lessons from it. I had a really fun time and I hope to participate in the upcoming tournaments.
Hello, my name is Lucas. I went to the State final chess tournament. This was my second time at this level of competition, so I had a good idea about the day ahead. Won six games and lost one game. I had lots of fun. It was a bit nerve wrecking as I faced each of my opponents, but I would do it all over again. I came fourth overall.
Ms Steward is very proud of all of us!
Coding Club
Two eight session lunchtime Coding Clubs will run in Term 4 facilitated by Code Camp tutors:
- Tuesday - 1.30pm to 2.30pm (lunchtime) in the Hall - from Tuesday 15 October (week two) to Tuesday 10 December (week ten); no session on the Melbourne Cup public holiday on Tuesday 5 November.
- Thursday - 1.30pm to 2.30pm (lunchtime) in the Hall - from Thursday 17 October (week two) to Thursday 5 December (week nine).
Code Camp allows kids to hone their coding skills and keep practising through weekly sessions over the term! Students will produce multiple games and apps using our exciting online platform Code Camp World! We have made Code Camp World as accessible as possible so students can truly focus on the fun aspects of coding and carry on their journey at home. Each week students will choose the features they want to build, and advance their problem-solving skills to build these features using code. They will take ownership over their projects and collaborate with their peers to make awesome apps!
Code Camp invites Essex Heights Primary School students to join our NEW weekly Free STEAM events. We have a range of free one-hour activity sessions hosted by a live Code Camp facilitator including:
- Learn to code
- Minecraft Engineering
- Design Skills 101
