Faculty Report

Health & Physical Education

Semester two has offered a variety of practical activities, both on and off-site, to support each course. Junior students particularly enjoyed swimming, indoor trampolining, and fitness testing. Meanwhile, senior students took part in Goalball, Netball, Spin classes, and International rules. Senior Physical Education students have been fortunate to use the College's GPS units and newly acquired Polar Verity Sense heart rate monitors, learning how to analyse data for performance improvement. Additionally, senior PE classes have engaged in various training methods, including interval, continuous, fartlek, circuit, and resistance training.

The Year 12 Physical Education and Health and Human Development classes were assigned the prestigious 3:00pm exam slots on Thursday, 7 November, and Friday, 8 November, for their respective grand finals (final exams). Both classes were well-prepared, and I would like to congratulate all students on their efforts. Feedback from HPE staff who have supported them throughout their six years at Mazenod has been overwhelmingly positive. Not only did the students work diligently, but they did so in a respectful, caring, and positive manner, consistently demonstrating personal excellence. A huge thank you to the outstanding efforts of all HPE department teachers who have guided these young adults from Year 7 to this point. As many students pursue further studies in sport and allied health fields, we hope the Class of 2024 will remember their favourite teachers—especially when those teachers need to visit an old boy osteopath to fix a sore back from too many drop punt demonstrations!

Looking ahead, we are excited to start 2025 on the right note. Students can continue to demonstrate personal excellence by keeping the following guidelines in mind for their transition classes, starting next week:

  1. Bring runners and sports uniform for your practical PE lesson (double lesson for all levels).
    1. If you are unwell or injured, you must still bring your sports uniform. Your PE teacher will provide alternate tasks to ensure your health and wellbeing is prioritised, without compromising your learning. Remember, we learn in PE through participation!
  2. Be punctual to class, prepared with necessary materials for theory lessons. This includes:
    1. Charged laptop
    2. Writing materials
    3. Transition booklets (once distributed) from your teacher.

Enjoy the upcoming term break and remember that any physical activity is better than none. Take care of your health and wellbeing and make the most of the summer by staying active!
