Flying new flags

– Anika and Clara, Year 6 students

We are Anika and Clara, two of the five flag bearers of Port Melbourne Primary School. It is our duty to take care of our school's flags (the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags), raise them every morning and take them down every afternoon. We also have regular meetings to discuss the condition of all our flags.

Last term, we noticed that our school flags were all different sizes, which goes against the Australian national flag protocol, stating that all the flags must be the same size. Also, we noticed that due to weather conditions, the Australian flag had been damaged. We take pride in flying our flags correctly and in good condition, so we decided to take action by getting new ones.

We contacted Josh Burns, our local member for Macnamara, who kindly came to our first school assembly of the term and presented our school new flags. He engaged with everyone, asking the students questions about the three flags, such as, what the red, black and yellow of the Aboriginal flag symbolises. Six lucky volunteers then got to hold up the brand new flags at the assembly. Mr Burns then formally presented the three flags to the school.
