Respectful Relationships

Upcoming Event - Community Walk Against Family Violence
Save the Date - Friday November 28 - more details to come!
Leongatha Primary School, along with Leongatha Secondary College and South Gippsland Specialist School (LEP), is proud to participate in this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign in Victoria, like we have done for many years. This year’s campaign encourages all Victorians to help build communities where we all feel safe and equal. It all starts with Respect.
The ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence' is a global campaign dedicated to raising awareness of the impact of gender-based violence. The campaign starts November 25th, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and concludes 10 December, Human Rights Day. These dates were chosen in order to symbolically link violence against women with human rights issues. Evidence presented to the Royal Commission into Family Violence indicated that violence against women and their children is deeply rooted in power imbalances that are reinforced by gender norms and stereotypes. Attitudes, gender stereotypes and social norms are learned through social and cultural expectations and school communities like LPS can play a part in changing this narrative. In the lead up to and during the 16 days we will share information and videos to support this campaign.
Plans are well and truly underway to hold another Community Walk Against Family Violence on Friday, November 28th. Students and staff from all three LEP schools will gather to walk together and take a stand against family violence and violence against women. This year we would once again like to extend an invitation to our parent/carer and broader community members to join us for this walk. Watch this space for more information about this event and the 16 days campaign and don’t forget to put this date into your calendar and prepare some orange to wear on November 28th!
