Hot Shots is a modified version of tennis (smaller courts, lower nets and lower compression balls), and is now the preferred format for competitions in Victorian Primary schools. This competition consists of teams of 8 students who combine their scores over a number of singles and doubles games. The Sandhurst Division competition featured 25 teams and approximately 200 students from schools across the Bendigo area.

Our team had a very successful day, winning 4 out of their 5 matches in the highly competitive Division One Mixed competition. They scored victories against Strathfieldsaye PS, St Killian’s PS, Creek St and Epsom PS. Their only loss for the day came against the eventual top ranked team – Girton.

As a result of this performance, our team finished second overall and have earnt a place in the LM Regional Final. This final is taking place in Swan Hill today (a full report will be included in our next Newsletter). Winning teams from the Regional Final progress to the State Final later this term. We wish our team all the best.

I would like to congratulate the students for the way they conducted themselves on the day. They displayed outstanding skill, teamwork and sportsmanship – and they should all be very proud of their achievements.

Auslan News

Grade Preps have been continuing to practise the Auslan Alphabet A-Z, with a focus on learning to Fingerspell their names, family and friend’s names. Students have practised signing: “Hello, my name what? [Fingerspell Name]” and they completed an Auslan alphabet cut & paste of their names to take home and sign to their families.

G1-6s have continued to revise the components of HOLM + NMF (Handshape, Orientation, Location, Movement + Non-Manual Functions) which are an important part of grammar, with Auslan being a visual-gestural language. Changing any of the components of HOLM + NMF while signing, can completely alter the meaning, so it is a fundamental part of Auslan. Students throughout these grades are developing a very good understanding of HOLM + NMF!! See if your child/ren can tell you what any of the letters stand for and what each letter means.

The G1-6s are also learning some new Handshapes that are used to make signs in Auslan. There are 38 common Handshapes in Auslan and 28 variants. Learning the various Handshapes in Auslan, helps us to sign more accurately. Changes in handshapes can also completely change the meaning of a sign!

G1-2s are learning Handshapes from Set 3: Middle/Feel, Bent Two/Kneel, Plane/Maybe, Okay, Three and Letter M/Mother.

G3-6s are learning Handshapes from Set 5: Open Hand Letter K/Perth, Cup, Round, Round/Forget, Flat Round/Eat, Flat Okay/Thread, and Thick.
