Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships:

This term in Grade 1/2 our topic is 'Positive Gender Relations'. In 1/2 PH this week we completed an activity called, 'the opposite of violence is respect'.

We began our lesson by discussing what 'respect' means to us - what does it look like?, what might it sound like?, how can you demonstrate respect? Some of the students answers are written below:

  • "We show respect by listening to other people and not talking over them"
  • "Being respected makes you feel good"
  • " Respect is looking after each other and your friends"
  • "We can respect rules"
  • "We can respect nature, animals, people, and things... like couches by not jumping on them"
  • "Letting everyone play is showing respect"

Afterwards, students were read scenarios in which a character was demonstrating a form of violence, not respect. Students worked in small groups to come up with respectful alternatives and presented these as a role-play. Respectful alternatives that our class came up with included; taking deep breaths to calm down before reacting or displaying violence, being an 'upstander' and calling out unfair behaviour and explaining why something is wrong or unfair.

The students of 1/2 PH have been demonstrating our School Values of Respect, Responsibility, and Resilience beautifully this term. Many students in our class have achieved their Silver Gugu award, and have finally cashed in for the rewards they have been working towards. Some highlights have included having a special lunch with Mr. Trezise, a special lunch with Miss PH, having an early lunch with a friend, and sitting on the spinny teacher chair for a day! We have reached our first class reward for Term 4, and will be having a casual clothes day on Thursday - Woo hoo!
