School Excellence Focus: Writing

Strengthening students’ writing is a key School Excellence focus across Rockley Public School. Each morning, the Koala Class begins the day with a “Quick Write”, a short, focused lesson designed to build confidence, fluency and enjoyment in writing.

During each lesson, students explore a clear learning intention and success criteria before the writing focus is explicitly modelled by the teacher. Students then apply their learning through either independent or guided writing.

Quick Writes serve a different purpose from the extended writing students complete later in the day. They provide regular exposure to a range of ideas, text types and writing techniques, while giving students opportunities to experiment, practise and write for enjoyment. During this time, teacher feedback is intentionally limited so students can maintain their flow of ideas and develop greater confidence as writers.

We are incredibly proud of the significant progress students have made in writing throughout this semester. Their growing confidence, enthusiasm and willingness to express their ideas are evident in the work they produce each day.

Maths

One of the Perks of a Small School! Our students enjoy the novelty of occasionally completing their Daily Review directly on the interactive whiteboard. The opportunity to make learning hands-on, engaging and tailored to our students is one of the many wonderful benefits of learning in a small-school setting.

According to Toby, it was the “best day ever!”
