Partnering with Parents to Support Student Wellbeing

Parenting and supporting young people has never been simple, and many families tell us it feels harder than ever in today’s world. Busy schedules, social pressures, and constant change mean parents and carers are often doing their best without the support networks that once existed.

At Wantirna College, we see student wellbeing as a shared responsibility between home and school. When families and schools are aligned, young people are better supported not only to engage with learning, but also to develop strong emotional wellbeing, resilience, and a sense of connection.

As part of this work, we have partnered with ParentTV, an evidence-informed platform designed specifically to support parents and carers. ParentTV provides short, practical videos presented by trusted professionals on topics such as emotional regulation, anxiety, peer relationships, sleep, motivation, and navigating adolescence.

What makes this approach different is how the content is selected. The ParentTV videos shared with families are carefully chosen based on what we are seeing across the school, drawing on multiple sources of student wellbeing data, alongside student and family feedback and staff observations. This allows us to identify key wellbeing themes for each year level and share information with families that is relevant, timely, and closely connected to students’ real experiences at school.

Across the year, families will receive ParentTV content in two main ways. At a year-level, videos will be shared that align with each cohort’s wellbeing focus for the ter , helping to reinforce the wellbeing learning and supports already in place at school. In some situations, ParentTV videos may also be shared directly with families as an additional support, for example when a student is experiencing increased anxiety or emotional stress.

Families do not need to create an account or log in to access ParentTV. Video links will be shared directly through Compass and, at times, follow-up emails.

We are mindful that families are time-poor. ParentTV videos are intentionally short, accessible, and designed to be easy to engage with. Our aim is not to add pressure, but to provide supportive, evidence-informed guidance that families can draw on when it is most helpful.

As parenting educator Maggie Dent reminds us, raising young people really does take a village. Through this partnership, we hope to strengthen the support network around our young people and continue working alongside families to create positive, lasting wellbeing outcomes over time.
