E-Scooter and E-Bike Safety: Starting the Term with Care and Respect
As we recommence the school year, we are asking families to take a moment to revisit safe and respectful travel behaviours with their children. E-scooters and e-bikes can be a convenient way for students to travel, however they also bring shared responsibilities.
At the end of last year, the school received a number of concerns from community members about scooter use, particularly where riders were not always mindful of other people using shared paths and footpaths. As we start the year together, this is an important opportunity to reset expectations and reinforce our shared commitment to safety and respect.
Riding with Care and Awareness
When students travel to and from school, they represent not only themselves, but also our school community and values. Safe and respectful riding means:
- Being mindful of pedestrians, including younger children, elderly community members and people with prams or mobility aids
- Slowing down and giving way on shared paths
- Using bells, making eye contact and communicating clearly
- Choosing care and awareness over speed
Small actions can have a big impact on how safe others feel.
Queensland Safety Requirements
To support safe riding behaviours, families are reminded that:
- Only those aged 16 years and over may ride e-scooters unsupervised
- Helmets must be worn at all times, with straps properly fastened
- Bicycle or motorcycle helmets are permitted
- E-scooters must be fitted with a bell
- No passengers or doubling, only one person is permitted to ride an e-scooter
- A maximum speed of 12 km/h applies on footpaths and shared paths
- To be legal, e-bikes must:
- Have pedals as the main source of power
- Provide motor assistance only
- Be limited to 25 km/h assistance
- Have a maximum continuous motor output of 250 watts
- Fines may apply to riders and, in some cases, parents or carers if rules are not followed
School Expectations and Safety
To maintain a safe and calm school environment:
- Students are expected to dismount and walk e-scooters and e-bikes when entering and exiting the school grounds, particularly near gates, entrances and high-pedestrian areas
- At present, the school does not have approved storage facilities for e-scooters or e-bikes
- Devices must not be stored under stairwells or inside buildings, as lithium batteries pose a fire and safety risk
- Students who bring these devices to school do so at their own risk, and unsafe use may be addressed in line with school procedures
Working Together
The start of the year is an important time to set habits and expectations. By talking with your child about safe and considerate riding, you are helping them develop responsibility, empathy and respect for others.
For additional guidance, StreetSmarts Qld offers practical videos and safety tips for riding e-scooters and e-bikes.
Thank you for working with us to ensure a safe and positive start to the year for everyone in our school community.
