5th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year A

Being Salt and Light

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells his followers, “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.” These are simple images, but they carry a powerful message for our daily lives.

Salt brings out flavour, and light helps us see clearly. Jesus is reminding us that our words, choices, and actions matter. Even small acts of kindness, honesty, and care can make a real difference in the world around us. We don’t need to do big or famous things to follow Jesus, we just need to live with love right where we are.

The first reading from Isaiah helps us understand what this looks like in practice: sharing with those in need, caring for others, and treating people with dignity. When we act with compassion, God’s light shines through us.

Saint Paul, in the second reading, reminds us that this doesn’t come from our own strength alone. We rely on God, who works through us, especially when we choose love over comfort, and kindness over convenience.

As families, we are invited to think about how we can be “salt and light” at home, at school, at work, and in our community. When we help a sibling, include someone who feels left out, forgive one another, or stand up for what is right, we help make God’s love visible in the world.

Discussion Starters

  • What does it mean to you to be “salt” or “light” in everyday life?
  • Can you think of a time when someone’s kindness made your day better?
  • How can our family show God’s love at home this week?
  • Who at school or in our community might need encouragement or help right now?
  • What is one small thing each of us can do this week to let our light shine?

God Bless

GRADE 5/6 SOCIAL JUSTICE TEAM – MINI VINNIES

Gallery Image

Today Mini Vinnies began to focus on Lent and Project Compassion discussing the meaning of this year’s theme: Unite Against Poverty this Lent.

They looked at the different work Caritas does overseas to help people in countries where they may not have running water and simple hygiene. Students will get to know more about the work of Caritas through short films. These will also be placed in the newsletter for families to view and discuss together. We hope that SFS students and families will give generously this Lenten Season as we ‘Unite against poverty.’
