Welcome Back to a Big New Year of Learning

Welcome back to a big new year at Skye Primary School! Our students are embarking on a knowledge-rich learning journey, and we are excited to share what this looks like in classrooms this term. Below is some information about what to expect and, we hope, a way to spark conversations at home about the learning taking place across the school.

Knowledge-Rich Learning in Term 1

This term, students across Foundation to Year 6 are engaged in carefully planned knowledge-rich learning units that build strong understanding of the world and support deep literacy development.

A knowledge-rich curriculum focuses on teaching students meaningful, shared knowledge about history, geography, science and society. Rather than learning isolated skills, students build knowledge step by step, revisiting key ideas over time so learning is remembered, connected and applied. This approach supports reading comprehension, vocabulary development and critical thinking, while also helping students make sense of the world around them.

In Term 1, our learning has been carefully scoped and sequenced so that each year level builds age-appropriate knowledge while contributing to a whole-school progression of understanding.

 

What students are learning this term

  • Foundation students begin by exploring personal history and belonging, learning about themselves, their families and everyday routines. This builds early understanding of the past and helps students connect stories to real-life experiences.
  • Year 1 students develop early geographical and historical knowledge through learning about continents, countries and maps, followed by an introduction to Ancient Egypt, exploring how people lived in the past.
  • Year 2 students focus on Australia’s geography, including states, territories and natural features. This learning is deepened through a study of Uluru, where students explore its significance, history and importance to First Nations peoples.
  • Year 3 students investigate Australia and its neighbours, learning about Australia’s place in the region and how countries are connected. They also explore local government, developing understanding of how communities are organised and decisions are made.
  • Year 4 students build strong geographical skills through Using Maps, learning how maps represent places and support navigation. They also study Colonisation, examining Australia’s history and the impacts of European settlement, including on First Nations peoples.
  • Year 5 students explore Exploring the Continent, developing deeper understanding of Australia’s landscapes, environments and physical features. This learning is extended through sustainability-focused texts such as The Black Cockatoo and Dirrarn, supporting learning about care for Country and environmental responsibility.
  • Year 6 students engage in complex historical and civic learning through Immigration and International Interaction, examining how migration has shaped Australia’s society, followed by Rights and Reform, where students explore key movements that have influenced democracy and citizenship.

How this supports learning in classrooms

These knowledge-rich units provide a strong foundation for reading, writing, discussion and thinking in every classroom. Students use what they are learning to:

  • build vocabulary and background knowledge
  • read and understand increasingly complex texts
  • write with purpose and clarity
  • make connections across subjects and over time

     

By learning shared content across the school, students are supported to develop confidence, curiosity and a deeper understanding of the world — setting them up for long-term success.

 

Learning in classrooms is well and truly underway, and it has been wonderful to see highly engaged students, settled learning environments and quality instruction on show across the school. Classrooms are calm, purposeful and focused, with students actively participating in discussions, reading, writing and hands-on learning. Teachers are implementing carefully planned lessons that support strong routines, clear expectations and deep learning from the very start of the year. We are so excited to have all our students back and ready to further strengthen their learning.
