Connect Year 6

Welcome Back!!!
Welcome to Term 1 and to the final year of primary school! It has been an absolute pleasure welcoming our Grade Six students back, and we are so proud of the way they have started the year.
From day one, the students have demonstrated maturity, enthusiasm and a strong sense of responsibility. They have settled quickly into routines, shown a positive attitude towards learning, and are already embracing their role as the school’s senior students. Their willingness to support one another, model expected behaviours, and take pride in their work has been outstanding.
As the leaders of the school, our Grade Six students are shaping up to be excellent role models for younger students. They have shown respect, resilience and a genuine desire to do their best — qualities that will be further developed throughout the year as they take on leadership opportunities and responsibilities.
Thank you for your continued support at home. We are looking forward to a fantastic year ahead with this wonderful group of students.
Here’s to a great Term 1!

The Next Fortnight of Learning
Mathematics
In Mathematics this term, Grade 6 students will be deepening their understanding of number by exploring prime, composite and square numbers. They will investigate divisibility rules and learn how these patterns help them work more efficiently and confidently with larger numbers.
Students will also be developing their data skills, learning to interpret and create a range of data representations. This work supports critical thinking and helps students make sense of real-world information by identifying trends, comparisons and conclusions.
A big focus this term is mastery of multiplication facts. We’re hitting these hard to build speed, accuracy and confidence, ensuring students leave primary school with strong number fluency. This solid foundation is essential for success in high school mathematics and beyond. Every bit of practice now sets students up to feel capable, confident and ready for the next challenge.
Literacy
In our Knowledge Building unit, Grade 6 students will be exploring people, place and identity on a global and national scale. They will learn about Indigenous peoples around the world, with a particular focus on the diversity of Asia and how geography, culture and history shape the ways people live.
Students will then investigate Australia’s connections to the world, examining why Australia is a highly multicultural society. This includes learning about the First Nations peoples of Australia, the impacts and drivers of colonisation, and the major waves of migration that shaped the nation from the 19th century through to post-World War II.
The unit also encourages thoughtful discussion about migration, refugees and asylum seekers, helping students understand the differences in experiences and rights, while recognising common themes of resilience, belonging and change. Through this learning, students will build empathy, historical understanding and a deeper appreciation of Australia’s diverse identity.
Science
In Science, students will explore reversible and irreversible changes. They will investigate how materials can be transformed, learn to identify different types of changes, and consider how these changes affect the world around us. This hands-on unit encourages curiosity, observation, and critical thinking about everyday phenomena.
Wellbeing
In Wellbeing, we are focusing on getting to know our students and building strong, supportive relationships in the classroom. We are establishing clear classroom expectations that include strategies from the Berry Street approach, helping students feel safe, calm, and ready to learn. Students have made “Ready to Learn” scales and will be creating self-regulation plans to support them in managing their emotions and taking ownership of their learning. Our focus for the first fortnight of school has been, 'Following instructions straight away'. So far students have all done an excellent job at following our school expected behaviours.
We are incredibly excited about the year ahead and the opportunities for students to grow, connect, and thrive. With curiosity, resilience, and positive routines in place, we are set for a fantastic year of learning and discovery!
