Connect: Year 5

Welcome to the start of an exciting new school year! We are thrilled to have your children entering Grade 5, a year filled with growth, responsibility, and meaningful learning experiences. This year, students will be encouraged to think more independently, strengthen their academic skills, and build confidence as learners and leaders. We value the partnership between home and school and look forward to working closely with you to support your child’s success and well-being throughout the year.
If you have anything you would like to discuss with us, please reach out via email. This then allows us to arrange a follow up meeting time if needed. Early communication between parents and teachers helps us work together to address concerns promptly and support students before small challenges grow into bigger ones.

Literacy and Numeracy
In the coming weeks, students will be focusing on building strong systems and routines in both literacy and numeracy. These routines help create a supportive learning environment and encourage active participation from all students. We will be practicing strategies such as turn and talk to promote discussion and shared thinking, using whiteboard protocols to quickly check understanding and develop problem-solving skills, and completing written responses to explain and reflect on learning. These consistent routines will help students build confidence, improve communication skills, and deepen their understanding across subject areas.
Inquiry
Inquiry will focus on natural Disasters where students will investigate the answers to the following questions.
- What are some natural disasters that impact Australian human and natural features?
- How do bushfires impact people and the environment?
- How do floods impact people and the environment?
- How does drought impact people and the environment?
- How do tropical cyclones impact people and the environment?
- Which government and non-government agencies and services assist during a natural disaster and in what way?
- How can people prevent and prepare for natural disasters?
Well being
We will be setting up clear and consistent morning routines to help students begin each day in a calm, focused, and ready-to-learn state. As part of this, students will also be learning about what stress is, how it affects their bodies, and why it is a normal response to challenging situations. Through discussion and guided activities, we will explore practical strategies students can use to recognise and manage stress in positive and healthy ways, supporting their wellbeing and readiness for learning throughout the day.
Thank You
Krystal and Jenny
