What's happening in our classroom?
Literacy
In our Year 4 Using Maps unit, students are learning about different types of maps and the key features that help us understand them. They are exploring how to read maps using scales and legends, comparing maps from the past and present, and discovering how maps have changed over time with the help of technology. Students are also discussing why maps are important for things like trade and communication, and thinking about how maps might continue to change in the future.
Numeracy
Moving forward in our mathematics learning students will be focusing on addition and subtraction. Students will be learning efficient mental and written strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems. Included in this topic is a strong focus on the importance of estimating and rounding when solving equations.
Inquiry
Over the upcoming fortnight, our learning focus will be on how living things depend on each other within an ecosystem. Students will explore how animals obtain their food, learn about producers, consumers and decomposers, and investigate local habitats to see these roles in action. They will research food chains, compare different habitats, and predict what happens when a food source is removed. The unit also highlights the deep connection First Nations peoples have with the environment and examines real-world impacts such as introduced predators in Australia.
Well-being
Over the next two weeks we will be working on:
- establishing our consistent and predictable routines
- understanding our Skye PS expected behaviours
- getting to know our classmates and share important things that make us who we are
