Connect: Year 3

February 2026

Welcome back to school, Grade 3! We are so excited to kick off another fun and busy term and couldn’t be prouder of how amazing our students have already been. From big smiles to brilliant ideas (and plenty of energy!), our Grade 3s are off to a fantastic start.

If your child brought headphones home at the end of 2025 or they were broken last year, please send a pair in ASAP. All students will need for Naplan and use throughout the year. Noise cancelling headphones/ loop headphones, wobble cushions and any other sensory needs- if your child took them home at end of 2025, please return them to their classroom, clearly labelled so students can continue using.

Upcoming Learning

Literacy

In our literacy block, we have started learning about Australia and its closest neighbours across Oceania, including where they are located and what their climates are like. We will explore how different climate types can impact the natural environment, as well as identify and compare natural, managed, and constructed features across countries. A special focus will be placed on New Zealand, where students will learn about major landmarks, popular natural features, and how constructed features compare with those in Australia. Along the way, students will regularly review and build on their understanding of Australia’s neighbours, their climates, and the features found across the region.

Numeracy

During numeracy, we have been focusing on recognising odd and even numbers and developing skills to read, write, and represent five- and six-digit numbers. Students are also beginning to compare and order numbers up to six digits and write them in both standard and non-standard expanded form. We are exploring how to identify one more or one less for numbers up to six digits to strengthen understanding of place value. Over the coming weeks, students will extend their knowledge of length, using metric units to measure, compare, and estimate objects with a range of familiar measuring tools.

Wellbeing

Over the past fortnight, our focus has been on revisiting and practising our Skye PS expected behaviours and what they might look, sound, and feel like, all linked to our values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, and Relationships. We have especially been working on following instructions straight away and allowing the teacher to teach, which helps create a calm and positive learning environment. We have also started using our Ready to Learn scales so teachers can check in with students throughout the day and support them with strategies if they are not quite ready to learn.

Celebration of learning

Kitchen Garden

We were so excited to take part in Kitchen Garden for the very first time, and the students did an amazing job! They worked beautifully in the garden, helped tend to the chooks, and even made delicious pizzas in the kitchen. A quick reminder for families: students need to wear hats for all Kitchen Garden sessions, please ensure sunscreen is applied before school, and students are welcome to bring gum boots to wear during sessions as things can get quite muddy in the garden. They will still need normal shoes for the rest of the school day. We’re so proud of how confidently and responsibly the students embraced this new experience.
