Connect Foundation

Welcome to our first newsletter for Foundation 2026! The children have settled into Foundation beautifully and have already impressed us with their growing independence, including walking into the classroom confidently and beginning their morning work independently.

We have been busy learning lots of new things. So far, we have been introduced to the letters m and s, and the children have enjoyed learning how to create two-part patterns. We have also been learning many of our school rules, which help us to stay safe and happy at school.

Please remember to see your classroom teacher if you have any questions, we are always happy to help!

LAST DAY OF TERM

Literacy

At Skye Primary School, we are implementing the Little Learners Love Literacy program, a structured and explicit teaching approach. Students engage in daily whiteboard practice, with a focus on developing proper pencil grip and understanding the qualities of effective writing. Recently, students have been reading and writing the letters 'm' and 's'. Here are the letters we have learnt so far and our future learning.

Letters/words covered so far: Future letters/words
Mm, SsFf, Aa
 I, the, The, My, my

Mathematics

In Mathematics, the children have been learning about patterns. Students have been copying and continuing two-part patterns using movement and concrete materials.

We have been learning to:

  • Copy and continue repeating patterns using sounds and/or actions
  • Copy, continue, and create repeating patterns using shapes, objects, images, or pictures
  • Identify the unit of repeat in two-part patterns

Here is a link to a video about patterns: Scratch Garden Patterns

Wellbeing

During our wellbeing lessons, we have been revising our school expectations. At Skye Primary School, we uphold four core values: Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, and Relationships.

As part of these values, these are the rules we have focused on so far:

  • I allow my teacher to teach.

  •  I keep my body parts to myself

You may like to ask your child to explain what these expectations look like in practice at Skye Primary School.

Reminders

Health Questionnaire

The Victorian Government offers a free health, wellbeing, and development check for all Foundation students. Families have been given information regarding the Online School Entrant Health Questionnaire. To complete the questionnaire, simply use the provided QR code to log in. During Week 5, on Thursday 26th February, Sally the Primary School Nurse is coming in to screen the children.

Attendance

At Skye Primary School we know that every school day counts!

When students attend school consistently, they stay engaged in learning, build strong friendships, and develop positive routines that set them up for future success.

Missing just a few days here and there may not seem like much, but over time, it adds up and can make it harder for children to keep up with their learning and feel connected to their peers. Of course, we understand that sometimes absences are unavoidable due to illness, but wherever possible, we encourage families to prioritize consistent attendance.

Thank you for working with us to support your child’s learning and wellbeing. If you need any support in ensuring regular attendance, please reach out—we’re here to help!

Satchels

Please remember to send your satchel to school as we use them for notices, readers and alphabet cards practice. (please obtain a separate bag for the library). If you do not have a satchel yet, you may purchase them from PSW in Carrum Downs.

Library

Please send a named bag with your child on their library day so they can bring a book home to enjoy for the week. Students have received a red material bag from their teacher which would make a great library bag!

Library Times:

Prep C Mondays

Prep A, B , D, E Thursdays

Shoelaces

We have noticed there are many children who come to school with laces. If they can't tie their laces, it is recommended they have velcro shoes. Here is a video to assist with learning to tie laces.

Independence

Starting formal schooling provides an excellent opportunity to encourage your children to make their own choices and operate independently within the school community. If you are finding you still need to assist your child entering the classroom we encourage you to let your child know you will be saying goodbye to them at the door. Students settle very quickly into the morning routine, however, when the class is crowded with parents it can make the start of your child’s day unsettled. We have been impressed to see so many children walking into the classroom independently.

Tips: Talk to your child the night before and have a plan eg; one hug, one goodbye and let your child know you will say goodbye at the door. Most importantly, stick to the plan. Please be assured that your child does settle quickly otherwise we would let you know.

Toileting Before School

Please remind your child to use the toilet before school so that their learning is not interrupted in the morning session.

Spare Clothes

Please ensure your child has a change of clothes, including socks, in their bag. Please name their items of clothing.
