Science

Mrs Clare Grainger

It has been a busy final few weeks in Science as students have applied and consolidated their growing understandings of chemistry in hands on ways.

Recently students in each class made pikelets served with fruit. This was a fun activity which helped demonstrate both physical and chemical changes to materials, as well as being a tasty treat the students enjoyed!

Following our end of term review, students made oobleck (slime made from cornflour, water and green food colouring).  This was messy fun which demonstrated physical changes to materials.  It was also a great opportunity to experience the fascinating changing properties of this mixture – sometimes a solid and sometimes a liquid!

In recent weeks, F/1/2 students also made bubble mixture and play dough!

Our senior students tested material combinations to determine if they were mixtures or solutions, and also, set up two experiments to observe the effects of reversible changes (dissolving sugar in water then reversing this by observing the water evaporate and leave the sugar behind) and irreversible changes (watching rust form on a nail).

Our 3/4’s studied a model of the water cycle to investigate changes between the states of matter.  It was wonderful to observe some great “aha” moments!

Through such activities, students have been applying the method of scientific inquiry by making predictions, recording results and drawing conclusions.

It was wonderful to finish the year with some explore time where students chose from a range of activities both inside and outside – a much loved opportunity!

Well done to all of our students for a fascinating and learning filled term and year in the Science room.  Looking forward to more science discoveries, fun and learning in 2026!
