The Outdoor Classroom
The GSG camp and expedition program is one the school's unique points of difference. Our camps and expeditions are significant milestone experiences from Years Five to Eleven. The programs are designed to increase in physical rigour, challenge, adventure and greater independence as students come to know who they are and how best to work with others. Camps and expeditions deliberately build problem-solving skills, collaboration, resilience and character attributes in a supported learning environment. Learning in the outdoor classroom is a valuable experience equal to learning in the indoor classroom. Skills learnt are transferable and are often drawn upon in life beyond the school gates.
Throughout this term, students from Years Seven to Ten have taken part in our camp and expedition program from Blackwood River, the Leeuwin sailing experience and beyond.
No doubt, there have been conversations around the dinner table about the highlights and challenges of each experience. I have had a number of conversations with students about the fun had, new relationships formed, overcoming adversity and the love of the outdoors. The vexed theme of food is always a conversation starter.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank Mr Ian Robson, Head of Cocurricular and Teaching Staff Operations who oversees the GSG camp and expedition program. He works tirelessly to ensure students have the very best experience of the outdoor classroom. I would also like to acknowledge staff who have taken part in various experiences. They often remark about the depth of relationships formed with students and how this improves learning outcomes back at school.
Our camp and expedition program is truly unique and will continue to shape the GSG way for many years to come.
