College Captains End of Term Report

Hi South Oakleigh! We have already reached the end of term 1!

We’ve taken this time to reflect on what has been an eventful term. It was great to see all the students at the beginning of the year catching up and having a smooth start to 2024. Our school was impacted by the recent weather event and despite this, we have maintained our value of resilience and haven't let this interrupt the community’s educational journey.

We would like to thank the college community for their support during that time. We are happy to report that our school has been recovering from this, with our classrooms being repaired and ready for use again.

Our first big event of the term was the annual House swimming carnival which was a great start for our school.

Our focus this term has been raising funds for the Monash Children’s Hospital School, letting kids like us who have different medical needs receive the same education as anyone else. Make sure to put your all into fundraising, this goes to an incredible cause and we are so excited to give back to the community.

We are happy to see how our year 7 cohort has been transitioning into their first year of secondary schooling. We continue to encourage our year 7 cohort into opportunities and extra-curriculars that South Oakleigh offers, as the activities and friends you make along the way shape and mould your high school highlights.

Our VCE and VM cohorts have been taking strides to hit their academic and personal goals. Even as we work towards ATARs, study scores and VET qualifications, it is important that we still maintain our relationships with others and sense of self. Our VM cohort of 2024 is the first in South Oakleigh history to take on this pathway, and with our new 2025 cohort coming through, we must take this year to set a strong precedent for the years to come.

We had our Open Night on Wednesday 27th of March, showcasing what we have to offer here at our school. It was a huge success overall in showcasing our core subject areas as well as the opportunities we offer. We'd like to thank everyone once again for their hard work and tremendous efforts that have been put into term 1.

As College and Vice-Captains, we know that our role is made easy when a college comes together. As always, we are all happy and willing to have a chat or listen and answer any questions or concerns you may have. We wish everyone a restful Easter break, see you all back next term!

Cool Aeronautics Excursion: International Women's Day

On Friday the 8th of March, it was International Women's Day, so 10 girls from South Oakleigh College went to Moorabbin Airport to hear about women in aviation, and what you could do to be a part of it. The 10 girls were Hiruni (Year 10), Abigail (Year 10), Dhruvi (Year 8), Zara (Year 8), Fern (Year 9), Hazel (Year 8), Alanna (Year 10), Angelina (Year 10), Hayley (Year 10), Kiara (Year 10) and I (Year 8).

We went on a bus at 8:45 am and then headed towards Moorabbin Airport. After they dropped us off, we had a look at the air museum. After about 5 minutes of doing so, they sat us down and talked about different careers and apprenticeships in the aviation area.

We had someone from Quanta's speak to us about the apprenticeships that they gave out and all of the benefits that came with it. After that, we had recess with two other schools, Mentone Girls Grammar and Fintona Girls School. When we headed back, we were split into two groups and looked at different parts of the airport. In my group, we first went to explore two different planes and even got to sit inside of them! In one of the planes we even got the chance to sit in front of the controls for one of the planes.

After that, we all went to a seating area and we had a woman talk about the size of the airport. She compared it to Costco and the DFO. After that, we went to a control tower and saw the majority of the airport from a higher view. After that, we walked back to the meeting spot and had lunch. When lunch ended we headed back to our seats and then they introduced a competition.

It was whoever made the best model plane that flew the furthest won! So Hazel, Dhruvi, Fern, Zara and I were in a group, and we got complimented because of our plane's look. But when we flew it, it went straight down! We later realized that this was because we added blutack at the tip of the plane for weight purposes. At the end of the day, they thanked us for coming and dismissed us to go home. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and has made me more interested in aviation.

Intermediate Interschool Sport

Our year 9/10 girls volleyball A team had an exciting day of games. We won 2 matches and unfortunately lost 2 matches, with the last game being incredibly close, ending in a 14-15 score.

Despite the tough loss, we all played played exceptionally well, and showed great teamwork. Everyone cooperated nicely and gave their best effort.

On behalf of the whole A team we would like to thank all the players, the supporting staff and a special thanks to Ms Jenkins and Ms Wallis for coaching us and next year we hope to strive for better.
