Debaters kick off a new year with success

On Wednesday, March 15 Mullauna’s three debating teams – one Year 11 and two Year 10 – went to Tintern Grammar to continue our proud tradition of taking it up to schools from across the Ringwood region. All the debaters did really well.

The B-grade team’s triumph was particularly impressive as two Year 10 students – Hunter Wilkins-Byrd and Victoria Halpin – volunteered to step in to help out when absences left Jasmine Armistead as the only Year 11 debater. It was Hunter’s first inter-school debate.

Jasmine was named best speaker in the debate in which we argued that short stay platforms such as Air BnB have done more harm than good.

They were coached by Ms Davidson.

Our two Year 10 teams (C-grade) also did impressively in arguing that the Victorian government should financially incentivise people to move to regional Victoria

The team of Caitlin Fankhauser, Bianca Unwin, and Teiva Levy (coached by Mr Graham) won their rebuttal battle against Whitefriars. Caitlin was named best speaker.

The team of Matilda Huppatz, Taylor Cameron, and Ethan Blakeman were highly praised by the Debating Association of Victoria adjudicator, but just lost to Whitefriars.

Ethan (Year 9) was particularly impressive in the way he calmly took on Year 10s.

Congratulations to all!
