Forest School

Forest School sessions are always filled with wonder and adventure (and scrapes, mud and grazes)!

I was really impressed to see Pippa, Ruby and Asher from Grade 3/4 use their ‘Snake safety’ skills this week when they thought they saw a snake in the bushland of Middle Gully. They applied the three-step process we have revised (and revised and revised). On further investigation (by me, an adult), we figured out that it was a blue tongued lizard, not a snake (thankfully)! We spent time observing its markings and body shape, and wondering what it might eat.

The grade 5/6s were flat out making pancakes using the camping stove this morning. They are practising being intuitive with some of their cooking, using some measured ingredients and then estimating how much liquid to use to create the consistency of batter they desire. It was a lot of chocolatey fun and I’m told the pancakes were delicious! On the cooking theme, lots of corn kernels were popped, again using the camping stove, by some Grade 2/3/4s! We applied scientific language to describe how the kernels pop and enjoyed eating it afterwards!

Dam exploration was lots of fun this week too, with a few slips and slides and some yabby catching. The level and temperature changes week to week and, although it’s the Wurundjeri season of the eel – Luk – we haven’t caught one yet!

It’s been wonderful to have Ginny (Mrs Tulloch) with us at Forest School for a few sessions, she’s super excited about all the fun we have whilst exploring the bushland (and pretending we are camping!) – she’s just as excited about mud and singing as me! I can’t wait to see how the Forest School program evolves under her guardianship.

From the mud,

Sarah (the outgoing Forest Fairy)
