Year 5/6

As the term continues...

Our 5/6 students have been very busy in and of the classroom. With our grade 5 students having begun their NAPLAN assessment this week, the introduction of new Wellbeing initiatives such as movement breaks, mindfulness and 'positive primers' to start the day on a positive note, as well as participating in interschool sport.

Reading

In Reading, students are working towards the conclusion of our novel study on 'Wonder.' Students analyse the text with their peers each day by completing different types of activities, such as discussing the book, finding the meaning of unknown words in the book, answering questions about the text and reading a passage of the book to the class.

Writing

In Writing, students have begun to analyse and write persuasive texts, beginning with understanding the format of a persuasive text and how it is set out. Over the next few weeks, they will identify different persuasive devices that can be used to engage their readers, such as hyperbole, emotive language and rhetorical questions.

Maths

In Maths, students have begun our unit on Money and Financial Matters. Using simple transactions, students are representing their change in multiple ways, whilst investigating and calculating the discount of on sale items through our understanding of percentages.

We are also planning a dream holiday, where students have a budget and are needing to research, plan and calculate the costings as part of their financial plan.

Humanities

In Humanities this term students have been learning about Natural Disaster, in particular Floods and Bush Fires and how they affect the environment, people and communities. For the remaining few weeks of the term, students will be focusing on a recent natural disaster of their choice and investigating its impacts and what prevention and mitigation strategies have been implemented to avoid the risks of this occurring again.

Wellbeing

Since the implementation of Pulse into our grade 3-6 communities, we have seen a high number of students completing the wellbeing check in regularly and even at home. Pulse also involved a gratitude component where students can send gratitude to staff or other students within the school. We have seen students send 800+ gratitude posts to others, which is AMAZING to see!

A few reminders:

  • If you wish for a more comprehensive look of some the work students do every week, please login into Seesaw using the parent logins that were sent home with students earlier this time. It's a great way to get a snapshot of your child's learning success and areas of growth.
  • Later in the term, we will be uploading a piece of work onto Compass with teacher assessment that reflects their learning in Maths. We call this a Common Assessment Task (or CAT for short). Lookout for an update on Compass for when this assessment will be available to see.
  • Students are required to bring in headphones that can be left at school. They do not need to be anything fancy, just something basic will be perfectly suitable.
  • NO HAT, NO PLAY
