Importance of Reading
We know it can be challenging to find new reading material for your child. For book suggestions, please see the below link. Staff at Williamstown Library and local bookshop, Book & Paper, are always keen to offer suggestions. Please note that all students have the opportunity to borrow books from the classroom and from the school library. For some reading ideas, be sure to take a look at the link: https://thekidsbookshop.com.au/c/middle-grade-9-to-12-year-olds?page=1&site=7209
Homework
We have begun our 5/6 Homework routine for 2026. Students are given their homework on a Friday, allowing the weekend to be included as many students have demanding weeknight schedules. Spelling is given out on a Monday as this provides 4 opportunities to practise their chosen words. On a Friday, students will photograph and upload their homework tasks and spelling and submit these to the assignment posted on Google Classroom. If you have any questions about the homework, please direct these to your child’s teacher.
What’s Happening in the Classroom in the next Fortnight?
Reading: In weeks 5 & 6, we will be focusing on the 3 levels of comprehension: literal, inferential and evaluative. They will read various material and create and answer various questions across the 3 levels. This will be an important preparation for upcoming NAPLAN testing, ensuring students feel confident in this space.
Writing: In weeks 5 & 6, students will continue looking at narrative text structures and focus on ensuring sentences make sense. This will include a focus on spelling and language conventions. Students will also use Elastik (online program) to plan, draft and compose both narrative and persuasive texts in a given time frame.
Numeracy: In weeks 5 & 6, we will be complete our focus on Number and Place Value. We will evaluate our knowledge and celebrate the goals we have achieved. The next focus will be to look at Time. This includes telling time to the nearest minute and calculating elapsed time in both 12- and 24-hour time. Any connections and support that can be made at home is much appreciated.
Inquiry: In weeks 5 & 6, our chemical science unit will focus on undertaking experiments and recording these in scientific reports. Some experiments that will come up over the next few weeks will include making oobleck and spiders! We will focus on reversible and irreversible changes that take place.
Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: In weeks 5 & 6, Willy Kids are Problem Solvers. Respectful relationships focus’ on the importance of emotional literacy and how to recognise the emotions of others and ourselves.
