Year 10 Geography Excursion to Port Fairy

Finuala Neeson

Recently, the Year 10 Geography classes travelled to Port Fairy to explore how the coastline is changing and how it is being managed.  It was a great opportunity to get out of the classroom and see some of the things we have been learning about in real life.

During the day, we visited places including East Beach and Griffiths Island.  We spent time observing the coastline, looking for signs of erosion and other coastal processes, and identifying different ways the area is being protected and managed.

As part of the fieldwork, we used the QuickCapture app on our phones to record our observations.  This allowed us to quickly log locations, take photos and collect data about different parts of the coastline.  Back in class, we used the information we collected to create a GIS map, which we will include in our coastal management reports.

Even though we did a lot of walking during the day, it was really interesting to see how the coastline is changing and how different areas are managed.  Overall, the excursion was a great experience and helped us better understand the topics we have been studying in Geography.
