Principal’s Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

It is hard to believe we have already crossed the halfway point of Term 1! Our students continue to engage with their learning in such an enthusiastic and curious way. It has been wonderful to see the energy they bring to school each day.

As we move further into the term, we have been talking with the students about how the school environment is different from home. While home is a place to be your comfortable self, school is a shared community. To make our classrooms work, we focus on mutual respect.

This means listening to the adults who are there to guide you and, just as importantly, respecting the learning space of your peers. Our Living Well, Learning Well Framework states that we all have a right to feel safe, valued, and respected, and an opportunity to learn. It also outlines the responsibility we all have to make others feel safe, valued, and respected as learners.

Super Dooper Readers!

This week, we were thrilled to present our very first Super Dooper Reader Awards. These awards aren't about who reads the fastest or the hardest books—they are about commitment and effort. To be in the running, students simply need to bring their reading diary back to school on Friday. It’s our way of acknowledging those students making reading a daily habit at home.

What does it take to be a "Balanced Reader"?

We often think reading is just about sounding out words, but it’s actually a mix of three key skills:

  • Decoding This is the ability to match sounds to letters and recognise common words quickly.

  • Fluency This is how a child reads with rhythm. They start to use expression and read at a pace that sounds like a natural conversation.

  • Comprehension This is often the hardest part! It’s about truly understanding the text and linking what’s on the page to their own world.

Learning to read takes time and a lot of practice. By reading at home, your child is building the stamina they need to become confident, lifelong learners.

Thank you for your on going support of Sacred Heart School and of your children's learning, as they continue to grow into life long learners for a hope filled future.
