Great Habits to support your child’s learning:
Sleep is essential for growth, immunity, learning and memory and is important for helping a child heal and recover. Healthy sleep means a good quantity and quality of sleep, with regular sleep routines. A child who does not get enough healthy sleep may experience difficulties with concentration and memory thus reducing their academic performance and overall wellbeing.
Teenagers aged 13 to 18 generally need 8 to 10 hours of quality sleep per night to support their developing brains, physical growth, and emotional well-being. Despite this, most teenagers only get 6.5 to 7.5 hours, leading to chronic sleep deprivation, which can affect mental health, school performance, and energy levels.
Benefits of sleep for school-aged children:
- Are more creative
- Can concentrate on tasks for longer.
- Have better problem-solving abilities.
- Are better able to make positive decisions.
- Are more able to learn and remember new things.
- Have more energy during the day.
- Can create and maintain good relations with others.
Tips for Better Sleep:
- Consistency: Maintain a regular bedtime and wake-up time, even on weekends.
- Tech-Free Zone: Turn off screens (phones, TVs, computers) at least one hour before bed.
- Environment: Keep the bedroom dark, quiet, and cool.
- Avoid Caffeine: Limit soft drink, energy drinks, and coffee, especially in the afternoon and evening
