What’s Happening in Careers?

It has been a productive start to the year in Careers Education, with students across Years 10–12 exploring their future pathways and developing a clearer understanding of post-school opportunities. The Careers team is focused on supporting students as they build awareness of university pathways, entry requirements and the steps needed to achieve their goals.

Year 10 – Introduction to Pathways

This week, Year 10 students completed the Introduction to Pathways module through Career Tools. This lesson focused on helping students understand that career pathways are flexible and that there are many different options available after school.

Students explored:

  • The range of post-school pathways, including university, TAFE, apprenticeships, traineeships and employment.

  • Qualification levels within the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

  • Labour market outcomes, highlighting the benefits of completing further education and training.

  • The flexibility of career pathways and how students can move between different options over time.

Students also investigated local TAFE campuses, university options, apprenticeships and Defence Force entry requirements to build their awareness of future opportunities.

Students are encouraged to continue accessing Career Tools at home via the Mazenod Careers website to complete any unfinished activities and continue exploring career options.

Year 11 – Careers Program Introduction

Year 11 students attended their first Careers sessions for 2026, where they were introduced to the Careers program and the support available throughout the year.

These sessions outlined:

  • The range of post-school pathways, including university, TAFE, apprenticeships and employment.

  • Opportunities to attend university presentations and career events.

  • The structure of Careers sessions and available support.

  • The importance of beginning to explore career interests and future goals.

Year 11 is an important preparation year, as students begin to clarify their pathway options and understand university entry requirements and future opportunities.

Year 12 – Individual Pathway Planning and Career Counselling

Year 12 students also attended their first Careers presentation for 2026, where they were introduced to the Careers program and the support available to them throughout their final year of school.

This session outlined:

  • The role of the Careers team in supporting students with pathway planning and decision-making.

  • An outline of the university application processes, including TISC applications, early offers, and alternative entry pathways – with further details to come.

  • Key milestones and deadlines students will need to meet throughout the year.

Students interested in competitive university courses such as Medicine were also provided with information about the UCAT, CASPer test, interview requirements and preparation timelines.

In addition, the Careers team has begun meeting individually with Year 12 students for career counselling and pathway planning sessions. These meetings focus on helping students clarify their intended pathway, understand entry requirements, and develop a structured plan for their transition beyond school.

All Year 12 students will meet individually with the Careers team to develop a clear and supported pathway plan for their post-school future.

Career Spotlight – Medicine Pathways in Western Australia

Medicine is one of the most competitive university pathways and requires strong academic performance, entrance testing, and interviews. In Western Australia, students can apply through either a direct undergraduate pathway at Curtin University or a postgraduate pathway through UWA and Notre Dame.

Curtin University offers direct entry Medicine from Year 12, with selection based on ATAR, UCAT performance, CASPer test results, and interview. UWA and Notre Dame offer postgraduate Medicine, where students first complete an undergraduate degree, commonly Biomedical Science, before applying to the Doctor of Medicine.
