Middle School News
Year 7 to Year 9
What a wonderful beginning we’ve had to the Middle School year! Our new Year Seven students have brought an incredible sense of energy, curiosity and enthusiasm as they settle into secondary school life. Alongside them, we welcomed ten new Year Eight and twelve new Year Nine students, all of whom embraced their new environment with confidence and optimism. It was clear from day one that they were ready to contribute to the vibrant community we are so proud of at Salvado Catholic College.
We are equally delighted to welcome several new staff members this year. Each brings valuable experience, fresh ideas and a genuine passion for supporting our young people. With the excitement of a new building opening and a number of changes happening across the campus, our staff and students have shown great resilience and adaptability during what is traditionally a very busy time of year.
Last week’s Year 9 Information Night was a standout moment. The strong turnout from parents, caregivers, students and teachers truly highlighted the strength of our community. The conversations following the presentation were warm, positive and filled with shared excitement for the year ahead. Your presence and partnership make an enormous difference.
Thank you for the ongoing support from home, especially in helping our young adults meet College expectations. When students arrive ready to learn, wearing their uniform correctly and meeting expectations, it sets a positive tone for the entire day. It allows our staff to focus on encouragement and learning rather than reminders about earrings, hair or jewellery, something we know benefits everyone.
Looking ahead, our Secondary Inter‑House Swimming Carnival is just around the corner. It is always a fantastic day, not only for our swimmers, but for all students as they cheer on their House and enjoy time together outside the classroom. These events strengthen friendships, build confidence and contribute to the sense of belonging we strive for.
Kindly note that the Swimming Carnival is compulsory for all Year 7 and Year 12 students. Please refer to Mr Brodie Fiegert's letter for more information regarding the Swimming Carnival.
Please ensure your child attends, and we hope to see many of you there supporting the fun as well!
Warm regards,
Mr Brendan McGrath
Head of Middle School (Year 7 to Year 9)
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) testing plays a significant role in assessing our students' literacy and numeracy skills. NAPLAN is a national assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 undertake each year to evaluate their progress in essential skills such as reading, writing, and numeracy. NAPLAN testing takes place in Weeks 6 and 7 of Term One.
NAPLAN results are reported against proficiency standards, allowing for a clear understanding of student achievement. These results are valuable for discussing progress with teachers, identifying areas for improvement, and setting goals in literacy and numeracy.
Our students are already engaged in learning tasks to equip them for the assessments ahead. The schedule for NAPLAN Online at Salvado Catholic College is:
Writing: Wednesday 11 March
Reading: Friday 13 March
Conventions of Language: Tuesday 17 March
Numeracy: Thursday 19 March
We understand that unforeseen circumstances may arise, so catch-up sessions will be arranged during the NAPLAN assessment window to ensure that all students have the opportunity to complete the assessments.
It is essential for parents to understand that students are not expected to study specifically for NAPLAN. Instead, we encourage you to support your child by reassuring them to do their best and understand that NAPLAN is a part of their school program. Teachers will prepare students for the test format and provide necessary support.
Important Note on Headphones:
Students in Years 7 and 9 will require plug-in headphones for some of the NAPLAN Online assessments. Please ensure that plug-in headphones are purchased as listed in the Year 7 and Year 9 booklists and are available before the tests commence.
For additional information, a brochure for parents and carers is available online. Further details regarding the NAPLAN Online at Salvado Catholic College will be made available to students in the coming weeks and further information about the NAPLAN testing can be found at:
