Skill Invest Trade Taster

On the 24th of July, we went on an excursion to Skill Invest. Skill Invest is a not-for-profit organisation offering employment and training services across Victoria. I went there a bit anxious not knowing what was in store. When we arrived, we were greeted by 2 Trade Teachers, Glen and Jeff. We went to a classroom with Glen and Stacy, our Automotive instructors, to take part in a pre-test of different car parts giving our Automotive teachers a basic idea of what we understand. We got to the practical side where we would be taught part of a car's engine and how the car works. For our first activity, we were taught how to take off the tyre of the car and put it back on. We were then timed to see how fast we could take off the tyre and put it back on. After the activity, we went back in the room and finished the pre-test with a better understanding of the automotive side of the industry.

We had a break and swapped from Automotive to Carpentry, which we were met by Pete, our carpentry instructor. He taught us how we needed to measure our angles, how to make a straight and proper cut and taught us how to use the materials we needed to use. We were taught the skill that you would need to make something even as simple as a door frame or something a bit tricky like a sliding door.

Overall, I thought the excursion was really beneficial, giving me a better idea of what's to come and what to look forward to. I would like to thank the trade workers that introduced us to the work industry and our teachers Ms Davison and Mrs Hayes who took the time to make it happen for us.

Thursday 24th July was the day we had an excursion to Skill Invest. There were three workers named Stacy, Pete and Glen. They were there to show us what the courses were about. I got to experience what the courses are for automotive engineering and also carpentry. For automotive, I learnt about all of the different parts in a car and got to learn how to use tools to  fix vehicles.

For carpentry, I learnt how to use tools to create designs for houses and other structures. We also made measurements to help us cut planks and woods to create designs. They also showed us to other people that were doing courses and skills they have for their future job.

The reason why we had this excursion was to know what it is like in these industries and getting to know our choices for our future jobs. I really recommend students to do this excursion. Thank you for the opportunity Ms Davison and Mrs Hayes.
