Defence Force Work Experience Opportunities

 

 

The Defence Work Experience Program provides secondary students from Years 10 to 12 with the opportunity to experience a wide range of careers available in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and the Australian Public Service (APS).  The program is offering a variety of placements in Victoria this year, with a range of career focuses, as provided below.  For more information, please visit the Defence Work Experience Program Job List website.  Please remember to check the Jobs List website regularly for newly advertised placements. 

 

Introduction to Defence Assistance Program (August) 

A program showcasing various career opportunities in Defence for students with a disability.

STEM Horizons – Air Mobility (October) 

An exciting opportunity for students to have exposure to Defence, defence industry and technical school career pathways.

 

Army Familiarisation: Puckapunyal Overnight (October) 

A program showcasing various roles available in the Army

 

Exercise First Look: Indigenous Youth Placement – Soldier (October) 

A program showcasing various roles available in the Army, for Indigenous youth.

 

Navy Familiarisation (October) 

A program showcasing various roles available in the Navy

  • Location: HMAS Cerberus, VIC
  • Placement Date: 27 - 31 October 2025 (these dates may change to the first week of November)

Day in the Life of a Medic/Nurse: Bandiana (October) 

A program focusing on the role of Medics and Nurses within the ADF

 

STEM Immersion Week: Fishermans Bend (November)  

A program showcasing various STEM careers

 

Australian Army Band Melbourne: Simpson Barracks 

A program designed specifically for students with an interest in Musician roles in the Army

 

Army Careers Day, Puckapunyal 

A careers day specifically designed for students and teachers showcasing various job opportunities in the Army

  • Location: Puckapunyal, VIC
  • Event Date: Friday 12 September 2025 
  • Applications close: 29 July 2025 (Teachers must attend with students as this is a youth careers day, students will not be allowed to attend individually or with family)
  • Link to register: Please send an email to vic.workexperience@defence.gov.au to register your schools interest along with number of total attendees.

In addition, applicants may apply for interstate placements, however please refer to travel and accommodation details in the placement Information Packs.

Headspace – work & study

Vulnerable young people who require additional vocational support or are transitioning out of your service/educational institution; Headspace Work & Study provides individual support for young people to reach their work and/or study goals. Support is tailored to their specific needs, driven by the young person and is strengths-based. Our three programs can help with finding a job, building confidence, receiving tailored study support, connecting young people with working professionals, and help with placement for a course.

Whether you’re interested in politics, planting trees, law-making or baking, your work experience placement at the Parliament of Victoria will be an experience you’ll remember. This is a unique opportunity to undertake a week-long placement in either the Parliamentary Sitting or Parliamentary Services program. Placements run for 5 days: Monday-Friday, from 9am until 5pm each day.

 

Parliamentary Sitting placements provide the opportunity to see the law-making process up close. Students will go behind the scenes with the staff who directly support Parliament sittings, to get a deeper understanding of our democratic processes.

 

Parliamentary Services placements offer a variety of opportunities that can be matched with a broad range of student interests and career goals. Students will have the option to work with staff in one of the many professional service areas that support the day-to-day business of Parliament.
