Extending Mathematical Understanding - Intervention Support

There are 20 students participating in the EMU program this term. All students have an individual learning plan to support them to fill the gaps with basic skills for their year level of schooling. Once the basic skills are demonstrated the student applies these skills to engage more fully in the classroom mathematics program.

Mathemagicians

On Thursday 26th June the Mathemagicians group explored local surroundings to demonstrate that 'Mathematics is Everywhere!'

Our guiding questions were:

Can we count items? Can we find and name mathematical features?

Can we ask mathematical questions based on what we observe?

Can we create an 'I wonder' statement based on a mathematical idea?

What inspired my thinking to take this photo?

Here's a summary of our work.

Some tips for reading with a developing reader:

  • It is important that students practise their developing phonics skills on a daily basis, with support as necessary, from an experienced reader.
  • Students are expected to read for at least 10 minutes at a time.
  • Choose a quiet time and place for reading, where interruptions can be kept to a minimum.
  • Sit side-by-side with your child, so you can both see the book.
  • Keep your eyes on the book.
  • Before offering to correct a word, pause. Allow your child three seconds to work out the word.
  • Offer phonic prompts for decodable words. For example, if your child says 'cup' instead of 'cap', say, "Look at the letters again and think about the sounds they make."
  • Re-read a sentence if your child gets stuck on a word.
  • Praise your developing reader when they have read a sentence or paragraph correctly.

Reading fluency takes time, but it will come!
