Book Week Celebrations

Book Week is always met with great excitement across the school. It is fantastic to see everyone get into the spirit of celebrating books and participating in all the activities. A big thank you to everyone who supported students in coming as their favourite book character. After our Book Week Parade we read 'One Little Dung Beetle' by Rhian Williams and created our own little creatures using Play-Doh.

Euroa Library Visit

As part of the Book Week Celebrations we visited the Euroa Library. There we were met by Cathy who read us some of the Book Week finalist books and showed us all the resources at the library. We were particularly interested by the story "How To Move A Zoo." We were in total awe that one early morning in Sydney zookeepers walked an Elephant down the street into the new zoo.

Mass

I cannot remember a time where we attended Mass in full Book Week costumes. Father Tony and parishioners were thrilled to see our creations. Below we have Snow White and Jack and the Beanstalk from Year 1 doing their readings for the Mass celebrating the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Book Week Incursion

We were fortunate enough to have Perform Education visit us with their show "Treasure Hunt" that celebrated 3 Book Week Books that we've spent some time examining. The Garden on Broken Things by Freya Blackwood, These love-loved things by Josh Pyke and

Afloat by Kirli Saunders.

English

Our InitiaLit sessions have started this term with lots of revision of concepts that we learnt earlier in the year. Our revision work on 'Bossy E' has been particularly fun. We certainly love singing the Bossy E song and making the vowel sounds long. Although, we have to be careful to avoid catching the "easles"

This poor student caught the 'easels'. He began writing an e at the end of every word. So we have to keep in mind we use an e to make the vowel sound long.

Storybook Lessons

At the beginning of the term we explored some of A. A. Milne's poems. It was incredible to see that some of the students were able to make the links between his poetry and his more famous writing of Winnie The Pooh. We particularly enjoyed creating rhyming couplets to create some of our own fun sentences. Recently we read a classroom favourite, 'The Day The Crayons Quit' by Drew Daywalt. Below is a link to a read aloud if you are interested.

Students enjoyed the opportunity to draw their own responses to the text. Some illustrating objects in less traditional colours whilst others opted to draw monochrome pictures depicting what colour they traditionally represent.

Onomatopoeia

Writing time has been quite fun of late. We explored the function on onomatopoeia (words that phonetically imitate or resemble the sounds they make) in texts. For example meow, buzz or hiss.  Together we created some amazing onomatopoeia word banks for us to use in our writing.

Mathematics

During Mathematics we've revisited using informal units to measure objects and order these objects according to size. We have explored patterns using the term 'unit of repeat' meaning the core element of the pattern that needs to be repeated. This has then led us to then look at patterns created counting by 2s. Later in the week we will explore 5s and 10s.

Religion

We have been delving into the Bible and looking at the different Gospels that contain stories about Jesus. We have read and listened to stories about Jesus calming the storm, Jesus healing the sick, Jesus feeding 5000 people, Jesus' birth and death. With these in mind, we have begun to create our own mini Gospel retelling some of the stories about Jesus in our own words. We were inspired by Year 4 students who came in to show us their own mini parable stories.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Many thanks to the families able to come in for parent teacher interviews last week. It was a great chance to touch base and share the progress students have made. We know life is busy and some families may not have been able to attend. Please feel free to email me to organise a time to catch up kking@sjeuroa.catholic.edu.au
