Year 2

Term 3 Adventures

What a great start to the Term! The students are settled in their learning, and are especially enjoying the new furniture.

InitiaLit

Story book lessons: We read the book over a two- week cycle and explore the vocabulary, themes, purpose, and delve into the books with eagle eyes.

The Day the Crayons Came Home - Weeks 1 and 2

The book is a series of postcards written by some mischievous crayons. They are written to Duncan, who has lost them while he has been drawing. We explored the following words: survived, horrified and damaged.

We explored the features of a postcard and wrote our own letters to Duncan, pretending we were a lost crayon. It was lots of fun to use our imagination.

Book Week - Weeks 3 and 4

Over these two weeks, we explored some of the shortlisted books.

The Garden of Broken Things by Freya Blackwood - Sadie follows a cat into the twisted vines behind a house. She finds an older lady, and that is where the adventure begins.

Afloat by Kirli Saunders - is a story written for First Nations People. It follows the story of an Elder who teaches weaving and gathering to a child.

BOOK WEEK

Did you know that it is 80 years since the first Book Week in Australia? We celebrated Book Week by watching Treasure Hunt, a play by Perform Education. We enjoyed our walk to Euroa Library, reading and talking about books with Kathy.

Our week ended with the Book Parade.

After the parade, we welcomed our families into our classroom. We read the story: How to Move a Zoo by Kate Simpson. Imagine being in Sydney when Jesse the elephant was walked along the streets to her new home at Taronga Zoo.

What would happen in 2025? How would the animals be moved? We discussed different ways we could  transfer the animals to a new zoo. We became engineers, creating a the entrance for a new zoo, and which animals we would like in our zoo.

Grammar

Our grammar lessons have had a focus on conjunctions (and, but, so, because), examining how they are used to join two phrases together.

For example: Nick likes hats and he always likes to play football.

We are also exploring verbs (past, present).

Spelling

The phonemes and spelling patterns we will be covering in Term 3 are included below.  Spelling takes up a significant amount of our InitiaLit lessons over the week and we work on our tricky words and practise the spelling patterns each day.

If you are able to throw in an extra practise at home, please look at the previous week's 'tricky words' as these are often the most incorrectly spelt in the students' writing.

Numeracy

Below is the Scope and Sequence document from Ochre Education. We commenced Term 3 investigating the relationship between multiplication and division. Our next unit is a dive into Shape, initially revising the features of two-dimensional shapes. Then we will identify, describe and sort three-dimensional shapes.

Here are some of our discoveries about multiplication. We represented multiplication as an array, using the term "groups of" to explain our thinking.

Religion

Our current unit is Let's Care for Creation.

In this unit students explore the wonders of creation and identifying ways to appreciate and care for it.

We used the scripture, Psalm 104, as a focal part of our discussions.

I praise you, Lord God, with all my heart,

How great you are!

By your wisdom you made so many things,

The whole earth is covered with your loving creatures.

You have gifted us with high mountains and living waters.

All creatures can now drink from your waters

As it runs down the sides of mountains

And bursts through springs in the ground.

The birds of the air rest in the trees and sing with joy.

All on earth are satisfied with what you offer.

All have enough to eat.

Wine makes people cheery and food makes them strong of heart.

The earth is full of your creatures,

How great you are.

Inquiry Learning

For the first half of the term, our inquiry has a Geography focus. We are investigating factors that influence how people access local and overseas places. We explored how changes in transportation has impacted the distance we can travel, and how technology has made it easier to for people to travel.

Responsible Pet Ownership Program

On Tuesday, the 19th of August, pet educator Abbie and Daisy, visited the Foundation to Year 2 students.

The program focuses on teaching students about dog safety:

  • when dogs should be left alone
  • things we should not do to dogs
  • how can you tell if a dog is happy, frightened or angry
  • a safe way to approach and greet a dog
  • what to do if approached by an unknown or aggressive dog
